TESTS †

For the Determination of Suitability as Redox Indicator and Suitability for Determining Iron

S a m p l e S o l u t i o n A . Sample Solution A. Dissolve 0.10 g in water, and dilute with water to 100 mL.

Suitability as Redox Indicator† To 2.5 mL of sample solution A, add 0.1 mL of 0.1 N ferrous ammonium sulfate solution and dilute to 50 mL with 12 N sulfuric acid. A distinct red color should be produced. Add 0.1 mL of 0.1 N potassium dichromate solution. The red color should be discharged.

Suitability for Determining Iron† To 20 mL of water, add 0.001 mg of iron and 1 mL of hydroxylamine hydrochloride reagent solution. For the control, add 1 mL of hydroxylamine hydrochloride reagent solution to 20 mL of water. To each solution, add 2.5 mL of sample solution A, and allow to stand for 1 h. The color in the solution containing the added iron should be definitely pink compared with the control. The control containing no added iron should not show any turbidity or color.
