18th International Conference on Petroleum Phase Behavior and Fouling D-Day beaches, dinner on the Le Havre beach, and a conference dinner at the “Grenier à sel” in Honfleur on the left bank of the Seine river estuary. There are many people that we would like to thank for their invaluable local support and for the smooth running of the meeting: Thomas Malgras, Amélie Dalibert, Cécile Delaunay, Eric Baudet, Frederic Bernard, Bruno Giusti, Sabrina Marceau, Benoit Paupy, Jean-François Minster, François-Xavier Cormerais, Isabelle Betremieux, Thierry Des-Courières, Philippe Macon, Geraldine Bourguet, Sara Gutiérrez-Sama, Mathilde Farenc, Leticia Ligiero, Johann Le Maitre, and John Weiner. Two years ago, when we announced our candidacy to organize this meeting, the Le Havre Conference Center was not even built and the C2MC joint laboratory had just been born. We hope that all attendees enjoyed this event as much as we did bringing it to fruition.

It is an honor and a pleasure to introduce this special section of Energy & Fuels dedicated to research presented during the 18th International Conference on Petroleum Phase Behavior and Fouling (PetroPhase 2017) that took place in the city of Le Havre, France, when she was celebrating her 500th birthday. The conference is traditionally organized each year by different volunteer organizations, and Total, the University of Pau, and the University of Rouen-Normandy were proud to continue the tradition this year through their Complex Matrices Molecular Characterization (C2MC) joint laboratory. The C2MC joint laboratory was created in 2014 by two analytical groups from the Universities of Pau and Rouen together with the Analytical Department from the Research Direction of TOTAL Refining & Chemicals. Including members from the complex fluids laboratory of Pau University, C2MC research programs are closely related to the scientific fields covered by PetroPhase. As for every edition of this conference, six themes formed the backbone of the program: “petroleum chemistry”, “flow assurance”, “emulsions”, “upgrading and fouling”, “shale oil, gas, and enhanced oil recovery”, and “petroleum properties”. We were privileged to have for each of these sessions outstanding keynote lectures given by Ryan P. Rodgers [National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), U.S.A.], Daniel Merino Garcia (REPSOL, Spain), Dominique Langevin (CNRS-Orsay, France), Nicoletta Panariti (ENI, Italy), Maurice Bourrel (TOTAL, France), and Harvey Yarranton (University of Calgary, Canada), respectively. The conference was also marked by an international study on the identical asphaltene sample, carried out by 28 research teams from 14 countries. The main results of this work were presented during two specific sessions, and the first papers detailing these results are presented in this special section. Jonathan Putman received the poster prize sponsored by Energy & Fuels for his work on “analysis of petroleum products by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) online with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS) and offline with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS)”. Full details on the event and a downloadable conference book of abstracts are available on the web site http://www. petrophase2017.com. The conference took place in the new Le Havre Conference Center and was in fact the first scientific conference organized there. The center provided ample space for poster sessions and exhibitor booths. Open and convivial discussions were facilitated by coffee breaks together with regional gastronomical specialties. With 260 participants (120 academics, 110 industries, and 30 exhibitors), this 18th PetroPhase was worthy of its traditions: world-class scientific presentations (thanks to the scientific committee), a culturally stimulating location, and generous support from sponsors and numerous exhibitors. Social events were organized around the 500th Le Havre anniversary, visit of © XXXX American Chemical Society
