BRIEFS Determination of the Chemical Structure of Microgram Amounts of Organic Compounds by Gas Chromatography Hydrogen is used as a carrier gas with a catalyst-contain ing tube and a flame-ionization chromatograph to aid chemical structure determinations. The hydrogen satu rates multiple bonds and replaces halogen, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen ; the resultant products are identified by their elution time through an appropriate column.

1961 DIRECTORY OF GRADUATE RESEARCH The newest edition of this unique directory is the fifth to be prepared by the ACS Committee on Professional Training. It covers the 1959-60 and 1960-61 academic years and provides a useful reference to:

The Direct Potentiometric Determination of Bromide Ion A Beckman p H meter equipped with a silver-silver bro mide indicator electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode is used. An accuracy of ± 2 mv. over a concen tration range of 1 χ 10_1Λί- 1 χ 10 -1 bromide ion is obtained. A pBr scale is described. R. T. PFLAUM, J . O. FROHLIGER, and D. G. BERGE, State University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa Anal. Chem. 34, 1812 (1962)

Characterization of Aromatics from Light Catalytic Cycle Stocks by Spectrometric Techniques. Compound Types of the General Formula C n H 2K _i 6 and C„H 2n _ 18 Aromatic components of a distillation fraction (622° to 625° F.) were separated by elution chromatography and identified by integrated interpretation of MS, N M R , UV, and IR. data. Alkyl fluorenes were found to comprise the major compound type in the C„H2„ _i6 series. K. W . BARTZ, THOMAS ACZEL, H. E. LUMPKIN, and F. C. STEHLING, Humble Oil & Refining Co., Baytown, Texas Anal. Chem. 34, 1814 (1962)

Characterization of Aromatics in Light Cata lytic Cycle Stock by Spectrometric Techniques. Compound Types of the General Formula C„ri2»-i2 and Cnri2n~i4 The data obtained indicate that these compounds in the CnHi>n-i2 and C«Ha,-u series are naphthenonaphthalenes, such as tetrahydroanthracenes, tetrahydrophenanthrenes and benzindanes, and the corresponding ketones. —degrees available —fields of interest and publications of 3702 faculty members

in 273 departments or divisions of chemistry, biochemis try, and chemical engineering in United States universi ties offering the Ph.D. degree.

Under each department heading, degrees offered and fields of specialization appear first. Then faculty mem bers are listed alphabetically with an up-to-date record on their education...general fields of major research interest...subjects of current research...publications during the past two years. With such explicit information you can clearly determine where your own field of interest is most actively represented.

The table of contents lists universities under the three main groups. There is another index by faculty names. A summary table shows for each graduate department of chemistry the number on the faculty, number of Ph.D.'s in each department, graduate enrollment, and Ph.D. degrees granted in 1959-60 and 1960-61. It offers a quick comparison by size.

If you counsel students or seek an advanced degree yourself, or if you are interested in knowing the kind of research done in certain academic centers, for whatever purpose, then this book will answer your questions and save you time.

An Adsorption Flow Method for Specific Metal Surface Area Determination Metal dispersion or specific metal surface area of multicomponent catalysts whose metal area corresponds to about 0.1 to 1% of the total is determined by a CO ad sorption flow method. The effect of temperature, particle size, slug size, and flow rate is discussed. H. L. GRUBER, The Atlantic Refining Co., Philadelphia, Pa.
