minutes the flask was transferred t o a n ice-salt-bath and kept a t -IO0 for 6.25 hours. The reaction mixture was carefully poured into a n excess of cold 5%osodium bicarbona t e solution and the methylene chloride layer separated. T h e aqueous phase was extracted three times with methylene chloride and the combined organic extracts were then washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated t o dryness. The crystalline residue was treated overnight with 5 ml. of pyridine and 2.5 ml. of acetic anhydride. The product isolated with methylene chloride in the usual way crystallized on concentration of the dried extracts. Filtration gave 0.24 g. of 6a,9a-difluoro compound, m.p. 240-243 ' and raised t o 255-260' after four crystallizations from acetone-hexane, [ a ] ~ +113", ":A:: 234 mp, log e 4.22; Ag!; 5.75, 6.05 a n d 6.15(sh.) ~.r. The residue was dissolved in methylene chloride arid washed three times with water. The dried organic extracts were concentrated to a small volume and the solution adsorbed on a column containing 8.4 g. of silica gel (mixed with an equal volume of Celitej.
