Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests eISBN: 9780841230460 Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents
ABSTRACT This monograph for 2,2′-Bipyridine provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general description including typical appearance, applications, change in state (approximate), and aqueous solubility. The monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications including: Melting Point, Clarity, Absorbance of Solution, and Sensitivity to Ferrous Iron.

TESTS Melting Point [Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Melting Point].
Clarity and Absorbance of Solution Dissolve 5.0 g in 10.0 mL of methanol. The solution should be clear. Measure the absorbance in a 1 cm cell at 400 nm. The absorbance should not exceed 0.30 AU. Save this solution for the sensitivity to ferrous iron test.
Sensitivity to Ferrous Iron

To 0.10 mL of iron ion (Fe) standard solution and 0.5 mL of hydroxylamine hydrochloride reagent solution, add 0.1 mL of the solution from the clarity and absorbance of solution test. A distinct red color should develop.
