HE ACS NEBRASKA S E C T I O N

will host the 36th ACS Midwest Regional Meeting ( M W R M 2001) from Wednesday Oct. 10, through Saturday Oct. 13, at the Burnham-Yites Conference Center of the Cornhusker Hotel in Lincoln, Neb. The meeting will feature eight invited symposia and several general lecture and poster sessions. For detailed information, visit the meeting website: http://wendigo.unl.edu/ mwrm. SPECIAL EVENTS. The University of Nebraska, Kearney ACS Student Affiliates (SAACS) chapter will host several activities for undergraduates. Sessions on professional development include "Resume Writing for Undergraduates," "Choosing a Graduate School," and roundtable discussions with panelists who are professional chemists. Social activities include a "Camera Craze" scavenger hunt, a coffeehouse gathering, and karaoke with door prizes. An undergraduate hospitality room will be open from 8 AM to 5 PM onThursday and Friday All undergraduate oral and poster presentations will be integrated into the general technical sessions. The Midwest Awards Reception and Banquet will be held on Thursday evening. The St. Louis Section will present the 57th Midwest Region Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry to Vasu Nair, University of Iowa Foundation Distinguished Professor of Chemistry ACS Pres-

identAttilaE. Pavlath will present the Midwest Regional Award for High School Teaching to Julie A. Larsen, who teaches chemistry physics, and advanced physical science at Kearney High School. A diversity luncheon will be held on Thursday and will feature a panel discussion on issues facing women chemists and younger and minority chemists. On Friday morning, all registered meeting attendees are invited to join ACS District V Director E. Ann Nalley and other ACS governance members at the ACS District Director's Breakfast to learn about recent ACS Board actions and to share ideas and concerns about ACS membership. Also on Friday is the Midwest Regional Meeting Steering Committee Luncheon. Frank E. Walworth, special assistant for the 125th ACS Anniversary Program, will host a special symposium on the history of chemistry M W R M will also host a traveling exhibit, sponsored by the Chemical Heritage Foundation, featuring the chemistry of Robert B. Woodward, winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Additionally, the University of Nebraska, Lin-

coln, department of chemistry will host an alumni reunion. CAREER RESOURCES. The ACS Career Resource Center, featuring the Regional Employment Clearing House (RECH), will offer career workshops, resume reviews, and a resource library on Thursday from 8:30 AM to 5 PM and on Friday from 8:30 AM to noon. Registration for RECH will take place on Wednesday evening. ACS members and national and student affiliates interested in registering as job candidates can obtain information from the ACS fax-on-demand service at (877) 2270505, the Career Services home page at http://www.chemistry.org/careers, or by phone at (800) 227-5558 ext. 6208. Resumes will be accepted from candidates who are not able to attend the meeting. The deadline for returning all sign-up forms to the ACS Department of Career Services is Sept. 24. Employers interested in recruiting on-site or posting positions in absentia may obtain registration and fee information by contacting ACS Career Services. ACS Career Services will offer minisessions covering the components of managing an effective job search on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. There is no cost, and no registration is required. a. The term "paper" shall include any scientific presentation that can be reduced to writing. b. No paper shall be presented at a na­ tional, regional, divisional, or other major meeting unless its tide and authors) appear on the program for the meeting. However, the President, with the concurrence of either the Chair of the Board of Directors or the Vice-Chair of the Council Policy Committee, may authorize an extraordi­ nary symposium at a national meeting pro­ vided that (1) the symposium has as its primary focus significant scientific develop­ ments too recent for programming deadlines, and (2) the request for authorization for such a symposium has been made jointly by a member of the Society and one of the following: the Chair of a rele­ vant Division ofthe Society the Chair of the Committee on Divisional Activities, or the Chair of the Com­ mittee on Science. c. No paper by a chemical scientist resid­ ing in the United States who is not a mem­ ber of the Society shall appear on the pro­ gram of a national, regional, divisional, or other major meeting of the Society unless it be a joint paper with one or more Soci­ ety members, or unless for a national, regional, or national-divisional meeting the author has been invited to present the paper at a symposium organized by a Divi­ sion of the Society or by Sections of the Society, and the Chair of such Division or of the host Section has certified to the

Executive Director of the Society prior to publication of the program that presenta­ tion by the author of such paper is impor­ tant to the success of the symposium. d. Rules corresponding to paragraphs a, b, and c of this section for a cooperative meeting shall be subject to agreement in advance between the organizations con­ cerned but should conform, insofar as pos­ sible, to this Bylaw and be subject to ap­ proval by the Executive Director of the Society e. The Society assumes no responsibil­ ity for the statements or opinions ex­ pressed by individuals in papers or discus­ sions thereof. f. The President shall have authority to exclude any paper from a program at any­ time prior to its scheduled presentation at a meeting of the Society Board Regulation VII, No. 3 supplements Bylaw VI, Sec. 6 as follows: a. Authorship ofpapers shall be accred­ ited only to individuals and not to compa­ nies or laboratories. b. Therapeutic Papers. It is the policy of the Society to encourage the presenta­ tion of chemical papers with pharmaco­ logical and physiological aspects but to dis­ courage presentation, by other than qualified clinical investigators, of papers in which clinical interpretations are the principal contribution. Divisions shall adhere to this policy when determining the acceptability of papers for their meet­ ing programs. The Divisions also are urged to exclude from their programs, and espe­ ciallyfromany abstracts issued, statements recommending procedures for the treat­ ment of human disease or announcement of any "cures" not confirmed by compe­ tent medical authority. Any author con­ tributing a paper that includes discussion of the treatment of human disease must
