CHICAGO 42nd Pittsburgh Conference and Exposition March 4-8, 1991

The 42nd Pittsburgh Conference and Exposition on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy will be held at the McCormick Place complex in Chicago, IL, March 4-8. This year's technical program will include three plenary sessions, 39 symposia, and more than 1100 contributed papers and poster presentations. The Exposition of Modern Laboratory Equipment, to be held Monday through Thursday, will feature 800 exhibitors in more than 2500 booths showing state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation, chemicals, equipment, and services. Nine scientists who have contributed extensively to analytical chemistry and applied spectroscopy will receive awards during conference symposia. The Pittsburgh Analytical Chemistry Award, sponsored by the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, will be presented to James Winefordner of the University of Florida at an award symposium on Tuesday, March 5. Winefordner, who is being recognized for his contributions to education in chemistry, has done extensive research on atomic and molecular emission, absorption, and fluorescence in flames and other hot gases, and on molecular fluorescence and phosphorescence of species in the condensed phase. The Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award will be given to Richard P. Van Duyne of Northwestern University in recognition of his work in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. Van Duyne's research interests are in electrochemiluminescence, electron transfer reactions, single photon timing fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy, and Raman spectroelectrochemistry. Sponsored by the Spectroscopy Society of

Pittsburgh, the award will be presented on Wednesday, March 6. The Dal Nogare Award will be presented by the Chromatography Forum of the Delaware Valley to James S. Fritz of Iowa State University. Fritz's work has involved the theory and applications of ion-exchange, gas, and liquid chromatography. His more recent research has focused on ion chromatography. The award presentation will be made at a symposium on Tuesday, March 5. The Charles N. Reilley Award will be presented to Stanley Bruckenstein of the State University of New York at Buffalo at a symposium on Wednesday, March 6. Bruckenstein, who is being recognized for his pioneering work in using very low level mass measurements to probe surface chemical and electrochemical reactions, has studied many surface phenomena, including ion transport in conducting polymers. The award is sponsored by Bioanalytical Systems, Inc., and the Reilley Endowment Fund of the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry (SEAC) and is administered by the SEAC. The Williams-Wright Award, sponsored by the Coblentz Society, will be given to Robert J. Obremski of Beckman Instruments for his research on the use of microsampling for the analysis of solids and solutions. Obremski, who has also studied the use of computers linked to spectroscopic equipment for qualitative and quantitative analysis, will be presented with the award on Tuesday, March 5. The Keene P. Dimick Award will be presented to Harold M. McNair of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on Wednesday, March 6.

The award, sponsored by the Keene P. Dimick family and administered by the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh, recognizes McNair for his contributions in chromatography research and education. McNair's current research focuses on HPLC, GC, and SFC. The Bomem-Michelson Award, sponsored by the Coblentz Society, will be presented to Alan S. Pine of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Pine's research interests are in the development and refining of tunable IR laser instrumentation for highresolution gas-phase spectroscopy, with emphasis on van der Waals molecules and collisional lineshapes. Pine will receive the award at a symposium on Wednesday, March 6. The Maurice F. Hasler Award will be presented to Karl H. Norris on Wednesday, March 6. Sponsored by Applied Research Laboratories, the award recognizes Norris for his development of near-IR reflectance technology for the testing of food and grains. Norris, a consulting engineer formerly with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has done extensive research on fundamental aspects of photobiology. The Tomas Hirschfeld Award will be given to Arnold J. Eilert, a graduate student at Kansas State University, on Monday, March 4. Eilert is being honored for his work on the development of an acousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF) near-IR scanning spectrometer. The award is sponsored by Bran + Luebbe Analyzing Technologies.
