The 54th North American Chemical Residue Workshop (NACRW) was held on July 23-

8

26, 2017 in a new location at the Naples Grande Beach Resort in Naples, Florida. First held in

9

1963 as the Florida Pesticide Residue Workshop (FPRW), the meeting has grown over the years,

10

and the new location provides ample space for platform and poster presentations, vendors’

11

exhibits and seminars. The workshop is sponsored by Flag Works, Inc., a non-profit

12

organization, and supported by many attendees and vendors who generously provide a product

13

and service exhibition, seminar and poster presentations, and educational user meetings.

14

The meeting was well attended by 346 participants, representing government, private

15

laboratories, industry, vendors, academia and non-profit organizations from 14 different

16

countries. The four day workshop included a short course, a keynote lecture, oral and poster

17

presentations in seven scientific symposia, and 41 vendor exhibit booths.

The workshop started with a short course “Efficient Start-to-Finish Analysis of Chemical

19

Residues" taught by Dr. Steven Lehotay from the United States Department of Agriculture

20

(USDA). The 57 course participants learned about efficient high-quality and high-throughput

21

analysis of different types of chemical contaminants.

NACRW Excellence Award, sponsored by Flag Works, Inc., in Separation Science

23

relevant to chemical residue analysis, was awarded to Dr. Harold McNair, Professor Emeritus in

24

Analytical Chemistry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. During his

distinguished career, Dr. McNair has authored over 150 research publications, lectured, and

26

taught seminars around the world to advance chromatographic separation science. Dr. Kevin

27

Schug, a professor of analytical chemistry at the University of Texas at Arlington, TX, and a

28

former student of Dr. McNair, accepted the award on Dr. McNair’s behalf and presented a

29

keynote address.

This special issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry devoted to the 54th

NACRW, showcases research topics presented at the 2017 workshop. The five publications

44

collected for the special issue cover several aspects of residue analysis, including novel

45

developments in sample processing, sample preparation, advanced instrumental analysis of

46

diverse contaminants: pesticides, nitrofuran metabolites, veterinary drugs and emerging

47

contaminants of concern in various food products.

My fondest 2017 workshop memories were talking to the first time attendees, who

49

expressed how much they learned at the meeting, enjoyed the informal and friendly atmosphere,

50

and appreciated the opportunities to meet experts and build their network. The 55th NACRW

51

(www.nacrw.org) is scheduled for July 22-25, 2018 at the Naples Grande, Naples, FL, and many

52

talented volunteers are diligently working to prepare another terrific workshop. We invite you to

53

attend to learn about new developments in residue analysis in food and environmental samples,

54

to build your network, develop and expand your knowledge and skills, meet colleagues and make

55

new friends!
