A Computer Evaluation of the Equations of Balance for Boron Hydride Species

literature. In these studies we have always introduced theC'styx" formulas,'or the equations of balance, but were limited in their application to only the simplest compounds since the calculations can bevery tedious and time consuming. Now, however, we have written a computer program in Fortran I V for use on the IBM 1130, which does these calculations for any boron hydride (neutral or anion) of the general form (B,H,+,+,P regardless of its c o m p l e ~ i t y . ~The program solves the first equation of balance (t = p - e - 412) for integer values o f t (the number of threecenter bonds) and ?, (the number of boron-boron bonds). The next equation (s = p c - t ) is then solved to find s (the number of hydrogen bridges). After this is calculated, the number of BH. groups ( z )is found by solution of z = p c - s. The printout lists the formulas of each compound and the allowable structure characteristics. It is then up t o the student to choose the most likely structure by consideration of structural symmetry. A listing of the program will he sent to all interested readers upon request to Dr. Carberry.
