T

HE various holders and hand-clamps used for holding test-

tubes and smaller forms belong, as a rule, to two classes. T h e bite is effected either by a spring or by a pressure exerted by the hand. T h e difficulty with the first class of holders is t h a t the spring is often inconveniently strong for delicate tubes, and not strong enough for flasks. T h e second class often fails when long continued holding is involved, as muscular pressure relaxes after a time. T h e following little device was worked out to afford a con1

venient holder that should take froiii nothing up to a diameter of a n inch and a half aiitl yet allow a grasp which corresponds to t h e weight of the object Iieltl, aii(: also not tire the hand. no matter how long it is held.

T h e clutch B slides 011 the parallel bars I:, and is slightly smaller than the counter-clutch Ai. This, with its curvature. allows it to grasp any object, no matter how sninll, that is placed between I3 and A. A double bearing, to insure ease of iiiovenient, is effected by winding the wire at D. T h e double arch C allows the thumb to press easily aiitl comfortably against i t , and act a s a knee-joint. T h e slyell G keeps the handle in the grasp, and the rubber strap E' brings the traveling clutch back and opens the clamp as sooii as the pressure is reniol-ed from C . To use the apparatus, the liaiidle is securely grasped aiid the end of the thumb is placed against C . 0 1 1 straightening the thumb, in the niaiiner of a kiiee-joiiit, the object is tightly held between the clutches. T h e hand does not tire on contiiiued holding because the pressure is taken in 21 straight line on the Lories of the thumb, and hence calls for so slight ;i muscular action as to be practically iiiappreciable.
