A DEVICE FOR INTRODUCING A WEIGHED SAMPLE INTO A VACUUM

The following is a method of introducing a weighed sample into a vacuum or a reaction chamber where it is necessary that gastight conditions prevail as sample is introduced. The sample is weighed into a slender, sealed glass tube with bulb (Figure 1). A silk thread is attached to the upper end of 1 FIGURE the tube and the sample bulb is then placed within a stopcock as shown in Figure 2 and lowered until only the tip of the sample tube shows above the stopcock. A rubber-stopper is inserted, making the outfit gas tight. When ready to introduce sample, i t is only necessary to turn the stopcock, breaking the neck of sample tube. This method has been successfully used .in Coker College laboratory for introducing samples into Victor Meyer tubes in making vapor density determinations and for introducing samples of FIGURE 2 calcium carbonate in carbon dioxide determinations.
