A Flowchart for Dimensional Analysis Dimensional analysis is a procedure that, despite its simplicity, often confuses beginning students. Some years ago, I devised the accompanying flowchart, which uses the standard symbols for start1 stop, process, and decision. When giving it along with the routine warnings about specifying units in detail (i.e., stating not only the units, but also exactly what they refer to) and not using the same conversion factor twice, I have found that a dramatic improvement usually ensues in the ability of students to handle the process. This improvement often comes together with student comments such as, "That makes i t so simple", and "Why didn't anyone else show us this?" I find it most useful to use it first as a n overhead-projector transparency while introducing the process, then to distribute copies for students t o keep in front of them while practicing.
