A Multi-Purpose Separatory Funnel On occasion following the extraction of one or mare components from an aqueous into an arganio phase and the drainage of the aqueous layer there is need for further treatment such as concentration of the organic solvent by heating, addition of reagents or a decomposition procedure prior to an additional separation through extraction with a, different solvent. Under these eircumstances it is necessary to transfer the organic solution to a separate container and return to a. separsi tory funnel. The manipulation involved increases the possibility for loss of sample and contamin* tion.

In order to avoid these difficulties we h v e constructed a. simple multi-purpose separatory funnel equipped with s. Teflon stopcock in which a number of operations can be carried out conveniently. The seprtratory funnel of the desired oilpeeity is shaped so that i t can be accommodated comfortably ins. water bath or heating mantle. For purposes of expediting concentration following extraction and drainage of the aqueous layer a short section of glass tubing is inserted through a cork stopper into the neck of the funnel and the drainage stem connected to an aspirator. Upon completion of concentration by heating and chemica.1 treatment in the funnel another solvent can he introduced and the second extraction carried out.
