A New Class of Iodonium Ylides Engineered as Soluble Primary Oxo and Nitrene Sources [Journal of the American Chemical Society 1999, 121, 7164–7165 DOI: 10.1021/ja991094j]. Dainius Macikenas Ewa Skrzypczak-Jankun and John D. Protasiewicz* It has come to our attention that during an attempted synthesis of compound 4 (2-(tert-butylsulfonyl)iodosylbenzene) described in this Communication, an explosion occurred that injured a laboratory worker, the details of which have been described in a C&E News Letter to the Editor (http://pubs.acs.org/cen/ letters/89/8902letters.html).1 While the specific reasons for the explosion are unclear, it was speculated that an increase in hydrogen peroxide concentration beyond the published amount may have played a role. Anyone working with concentrated mixtures of H2O2 and acetic anhydride is urged to take appropriate safety precautions and/or seek alternative procedures.
