A new way to thicken shampoos, dyes, industrial and specialty chemicals* Now you can thicken anhydrous and aqueous systems containing polyethoxy and polyhydroxy liquids by simply stirring in Carbopol® resins . . . and the systems remain sparkling clear. (As you know, Carbopol resins generally require a neu tralizing agent to swell and thicken.) Now, exciting new technology simplifies formulations and makes new products and markets available to you. The procedure? Simple. After stirring in Carbopol, allow the mix to stand. At room tem perature, thickening takes one to three hours. By warming and continual mixing, the time can be reduced to twenty minutes. Here are just five examples of the wide variety of applications possible.
Shampoos Shampoos can be gelled with this simple pro cedure. Mix 10-100 parts by weight Tergitol® 15-S-121 with 90-0 parts water. While stirring, add 1 part Carbopol 941 resin to this blend. Continue to stir slowly for 1 hour to avoid lumping. Note: Other nonionic surfactants modified with 5 or more mois of ethylene oxide can be used in dilute form. Mix carefully to avoid air inclusion. A clear gel will result.
Dyes Dyes for hair, nylon, and wool printing can be thickened by dissolving 2 parts acid dye in a blend of 70 parts water and 30 parts Methyl Cellosolve1. Carefully disperse 2.5 parts Carbo
pol 940 to avoid lumping. Agitate for 1 hour at room temperature. Note: pH is 3-5; viscosity is 10,000 to 22,000 cps. Final viscosity will vary with choice of dye.
Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Gels The simplicity and unusual clarity of these gels make them particularly suitable for pharmaceu ticals and cosmetics. The first gel can be made by slowly stirring 2 parts Carbopol 941 or 940 resin into 100 parts propylene glycol. Mix for 1 to 2 hours for maximum thickening. A second type of gel can be produced by slowly mixing 2 parts Carbopol 941 or 940 resin with 100 parts glycerin. Mixing time is 1 to 2 hours. The third gel is made by dissolving 2 parts Carbopol 941 resin into 100 parts Carbowax 600 l . Again, mixing and thickening takes 1 to 2 hours. Note: Other molecular-weight grades of Car bowax can be used. Other applications of this new thickening technology include adhesives, chemical special ties, inks and paints.
