Surface Active Agents. Vol. 24. 300 pages. Sadtler Research Laboratories, 3316 Spring Garden St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19104. 1 9 8 0 . $ 2 1 0

T h e volume includes 300 spectra of commercially available defoamers, detergents, emulsifiers, sequestering agents, soaps, and softeners. T h e spect r a are determined on an infrared grating spectrophotometer in the frequency range 4000 to 200 c m - 1 and are presented on transmittance vs. linear wavenumber charts. Each spect r u m includes the product's trade name, chemical description, physical data (when available), source of sample, method of sample preparation, and model of instrument used to record the spectrum. Included is an al-

phabetical index of products by trade name and a classification index by chemical type.

Continuing Series Infrared Interferometric Spectrometers. Vol. 8. A. E. Martin, Ed. xi + 292 pages. Elsevier/North-Holland, Inc., 52 Vanderbilt Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017. 1980. $73.25

Coal Liquefaction: The Chemistry and Technology of Thermal Processes. D. Duayne Whitehurst, Thomas O. Mitchell, Malvina Farcasiu. xv + 378 pages. A c a d e m i c Press, 111 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10003. 1980. $19.50

T h e findings reported in this book are the result of a cooperative fouryear research effort conducted by Mobil and the Electric Power Research Institute to describe the conversion of coal to liquids in terms of the structural and functional differences between the coal and the desired liquid products. T h e r m a l and catalytic liquefaction processes are discussed in t e r m s of their limitations and areas for improvement, with the former method receiving the most attention. Physical properties and rank of coal relative to its conversion, catalytic effects of mineral matter, effects of process parameter variation, problems with side reactions (such as char formation), and the relationship between solvent composition and liquefaction behavior are some of the topics discussed.

T h e intent of this latest volume in the series on vibrational spectroscopy is to describe thoroughly, yet simply, the theoretical background of Fourier transform spectroscopy, together with a number of associated instruments and techniques. Modified Michelson interferometers are described in detail, and attention is given to polarization effects and methods for measuring refractive index. Previously unpublished works are included.

Progress in Drug Metabolism. Vol. 4. J. W. Bridges and L. F. Chasseaud, Eds. ix + 335 pages. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 605 Third Ave., New York, N.Y. 10016. 1980. $ 7 2

T h e fourth volume of this review series focuses on the topics of drug absorption and drug measurement. T h e
