daptation to Convert Commercial Automatic Titrators to Automatic Microtitrators ark L. Lyndrupl Department of Chemistry, Northwestern University, Evansfon, Ill. IN STUDIES of certain polymeric acids and bases, it became necessary to obtain titration curves for milligram portions of fractionated material. Commercially available automatic titrators could not be used as the volume of titrant necessary to obtain full chart recording was at least 0.5 ml. Thus a solution volume of 50 ml would be required t o keep dilution of the polymer to less than 1Z during a titration. By a simple adaptation of a Radiometer Titragraph TTT-1 automatic titrator, we were able easily-and reproducibly -to carry out titrations in a total volume of less than 0.3 ml. EXPERIMENTAL

A diagram of the titration cell is shown in Figure 1. The double-walled borosilicate glass cell was thermostated to A0.01 O G. A calibrated pipet was used to deliver a portion of the sample solution to be titrated into the cell. Nitrogen, freed from COZ,was then bubbled through the solution for 5 minutes through the 22-gauge Teflon needle. The needle was then raised until it was about 5 mm above the surface of the liquid, and the Sargent combination electrode was lowered into the solution until the platinum pin was completely immersed. The titrant delivery tube was then placed in the solution so the tip was within 0.5 mm of the glass bulb of the electrode, and the titrator was started. The electrode was connected to the titrator by means of a Beckman electrode adapter obtained from Radiometer. 1

Present address, Physical Chemistry Institute, Uppsala, Sweden. The adapter to the titrator is shown in Figure 2. The output from the titrator (flexible drive cable) is normally geared so that when the Radiometer microburet syringe is used, 50 revolutions of the cable give full chart recording (100 graph divisions). The output cable was connected to a gear reduction box which reduced the output by a factor of 18. The final gear in the box was joined, by epoxy cement, to the handle of the micrometer of the Spinco No. 153 microtitrator. A reduction of 18 gave a full scale recording for 2.778 revolutions of the micrometer (5.555 microliters of titrant). Concentrated solutions of C02-free NaOH or HCI were used as the titrant and were prepared by standard methods. RESULTS

With this apparatus, it was possible to determine the acidity constants of acids or bases, either of high or low molecular weight, with less than a milligram of sample per titration. The pK’s could be established within 1 0 . 0 2 pH unit by direct reading from the titration curve on the recorder or to within kO.01 pH unit if the data were fitted to the Henderson-Hasselbach equation. Kent Chromalog, low-cost integration system, bridges the gap between mechanical and highly sophisticated electronic integrators for use in gas chromatography. The instrument may be connected directly t o a thermal conductivity detector or to the output of any detector preamplifier. It produces an immediate, numerical printed record of the quantity of each constituent present in the sample. Input ranges between 0 to 0.5 mV and 0 to 10 mV are available in five discrete steps. Counting rate is 2500 counts/rninute at full scale on all ranges. Chemicon Co., 839 Beacon St., Boston, Mass. 02215. 42 1

The Xodel 9500 water quality monitor provides constant 24-hour measurement of all or any combination of the following variables: pH, chloride ion, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, and solar radiation intensity. The instrument is modular and provides independent sample flow to each sensor; flow rates can be collectively or individually controlled. AmpIifiers provide 4-20 milliampere dc output; the signal is compatible with analog-todigital devices. Elemental Analyzer Conversion Unit Conversion of the Model 240 elemental analyzer for oxygen analysis, as well as simultaneous carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen, requires only replacement of combustion tubes, addition of a glass connector, and changing the oven temperature. The instrument offers quantitative accuracies with a precision of 2 0.3% and accepts samples as large as 3 mg. Perkin-Elmer Corp., Main Ave., Xorwalk, Conn. 06852. 423

The Cahn GRAM Electrobalanc8has a platinum band instead of knife edges, for better performance and reliability. N o routine maintenance to remember. , , or forget. So rugged and immune t o its environment, you can use it where you need it; so stable it is used for long term experiments; and so well built it IS used in high vacuum and corrosive atmospheres. It has earned a reputation for reliability i n thousands of laboratories. So easy t o use that anyone can be trusted t o use it. So fast that no one will want t o use anything else. Complete weighings take a fraction of a minute and the Electrobalance reads directly in milligrams or micrograms. You can weigh small samples with a precision of one-tenth microgram (lo-’ grams), weigh samples up ,to one gram. Eleven ranges let you use this one balance for a variety of tasks which previously required several different instruments. Looking for a better balance? Get a Cahn GRAM Electrobalance.

Gelscan, automatic recording and integrating scanner, is designed for use with electrophoretic separations on standard cellular acetate membranes and other electrophoretic support media, and chromatographic separations on prepared strips or 5 X 20 cm plates. The instrument operates on the principle of densitometry and uses four different filters: red, blue, green, and clear. Various carriers are available depending on the media being scanned. The recorder portion may be detached and used separately as a logarithmic mV recorder. The, Gelscan has 11 input voltages (2 mV to 20 V dc); six different chart speeds; and two different scanning speeds. Gelman Instrument Co., P. 0. Box 1448, Ann Arbor, Mich. 48106.

with the NEW Bausch %t Lomb Concentration Computer Gone are the days of involved calculations, checking tables or figuring formulas. Today, if you want to h o w the concentration of a solution . . . read it! Just attach the new Bausch & Lomb Concentration Computer to your spectrophotometer. Most B&L Spectrophotometers attach directly, several other makes are easily adapted. Now the whole job boils down to three quick steps: 1. Set zero. 2. Calibrate to a known standard. 3. Read the unknown concentration directly. Simple. . . Fast. . . Accurate! The price is just $750 , . . making this the fist and only low cost unit that automatically reads concentration directly for any solution obeying Beers law. We’ll gladly send you a descriptive brochure (33-2215) or why not let us show you? Write Bausch & Lomb, 60947 Bausch Street, Rochester, New York 14602. P.S. DON’T BE HIGH PRESSURED INTO BUYINGA LOW PRESSURE VARIABLE SPEED PUMP

Operating a t pressures t o 50 psi, the Model 300 metering pump w i l l deliver a reproducible, essentially non-pulsating f l o w within -i- 2% of t h e dialed-in rate, easily outperforming lower pressure peristaltic or similar variable speed pumps. The Model 300 has a pumping range continuously variable f r o m 0 t o 500 ml/hr, is self priming, and does not require any preliminary calibration. Almost a l l liquids can easily be accommodated. IMMERSION COOLER cools liquid in laboratory baths You can lower temperature, even produce sub-zero temperature, in laboratory baths with the compact, space saving portable Eberbach Immersion Cooler. It operates on the Peltier effect in semiconductor thermocouples. When direct current of proper polarity is applied to the thermocouples, heat is extracted from the outer metal shell and moves to the central heat sink from which it is removed by a flowing coolant (tap water). Direct current is supplied by the Power Supply Unit shown, which operates from 1 1 5 volt, 5 0 / 6 0 cycle input, drawing 165 watts. Thermal pumping rate is 1 7 5 BTU per hour when bath and coolant temperature are the same. Catalog No. 9900 Thermoelectric Immersion Cooler Assembly with DC Power Supply, 115 volt 50160 cycle , $250.00
