A Simple Apparatus for Drying Gases We have had a lot of trouble with the usual linear and U-shaped drying tubes used for drying gases, at pressures just above 1 atmosphere, in our student laboratories in physical chemistry. After same tentative devices we designed the one described below, which has given a very good performance. in. dirtmeter The drying apparatus consists of a. cylindrical glass vessel l'/% and 5 in. height closed a t one end. The other extremity is cemented with epoxy resin to an annular piece of brass whose internal diameter is just wide enough to accommodate the glass vessel. The brass piece is externaly threaded and has a circular groove to accommodate a rubber O-ring. The brass cover piece screws onto the vessel and carries the welded inlet and outlet tubes. The inlet tube extends along the axis of the glass vessel, andits tip is cut at an angle to facilitate screwing on the cover when the glass vessel is filled. To mount the gas drye'r the glaas vessel is fil!ed with medium grain Silica Gel with moisture indicator, and some cotton is placed on the surface to prevent loosing of silica. Then the cover piece is screwed into position. The glass walls allow the condition of the drying material to be seen by the change of color.
