A Simple Distillation Apparatus

W e would like to describe a simplified Kugelrohr-type short-path distillation apparatus which has the advantages of low cost and ease of construction.' The apparatus as illustrated involves a side-arm test tube and another test tuhe of smaller size. The sidearm test tube is equipped a t the nipple with a single hole rubber stopper. A smaller test tube is attached to the stopper. To the mouth of the side-arm test tube a piece of glass tubing through a rubber stopper leads to the vacuum source. Variations in the apparatus can easily be made, for example, by replacing

the smaller test tube with a 25- or 50-ml filtering flask or introducing a thermometer a t the mouth of the side-arm test tube. The sample can be introduced simply with a syringe or pipet. The sample can be covered with some glass wool to reduce bumping and to introduce some degree of fractionation. Heat can be applied either by an oil bath, or by a micro-burner. The distillate may be easily removed after distillation. If the test tube should become charred, it can be discarded without any concern for cost. The quantity distilled will of course determine the size of the test tuhe to be used. Various size side-arm test tubes can be obtained from any major supply house. The cost for such a distillation apparatus does not run more than 91.00. 'See also: &IORRISON, H., J. CHEM.EDUC., 44, 161 (1967); GFAEVE, R., AND WAHL,JR., G. H., J. CHEM.EDUC.,41, 279 (1964).
