A Simple, Inexpensive Shaking Apparatus lleeently we had a need for s. simple, inexpensive shaking apparatus. Since the shaker was i~eededt.xthel. quickly and there was no moncy available a t the time for the pnrchwe of n cummerrial model, it was decided to build a simple shaker that could he used a t room temperature. The shaker (left) was ccnlstrwted from materials fotmd armold t,he st,ockroum and rhonld be generally availlthle. The base was made from a heavy piece of chipboard which had been wed in shipping a piore of equipmellt. A piece of a/,-im plywwd would serve as well. The rhskor plntfrxm was simply x piece of '/a-in. p~.essedwoad 12 in. sqrta1.e with a hole drilled in the center to take the &wing rod. The rod waq made from R piere of '/,-ill. col&~dledsteel and hent wit,h n small nfi'ret t u give a rirrltlnr motion to the platform. Short pierus (abor~t'/. in.) of '/,-in. 0.d. copper tubing wew hdted near the mrnew of the platform and the haye. These were by nsed w st.nbs to mo\o!l theiwlr piecesof l/,in. pressure tthing that s ~ ~ p p u tthe . t platform un the b a ~ e . A thiu piew of foam p l a s t i ~wm pnt on top of the plntfom~and this held the heakers or flasks in place mther well. A variable speed stiwing motor n a y used to drive the shaker a t ahallt 12; rpm. The cost, of the apparatus other thau the motor was nealiaihle. .. A reeund shaker (~.ight) was oonst~.ul:tedin our shop that a d d be wed iu a simple sel.okrgicctl bath for incubrttiou at higher temperntu~.es. The t,op and hase were ao~wtrul:t,edof stainless steel tu fit in a mediam sized water hath. B~alizer p h g s u-ere turned from welding nld to snppovt the platfurm on the haw. Spring hrass dip2 sere bolted to the shaker platform. The drive way by a brays eccentric on the stainless steel shaft running in a brass beaing in the hase. The rnst of the materials tn lonstrtxt thisshaker w ~ approximntely s X20 and requil.es the ,me of an inexpensive watel. bath and a stirring motor.
