characteristic skeleton of samandarine is common to four other alkaloids, Le., samandarone (IIa),2 samandaridine, 0-a~etylsamandarine,~ and samandesone,6 which differ from each other only in the D-ring substituent. We wish to record the total synthesis of samandarone, which will be a general intermediate for the preparation of structurally similar alkaloids.

through farmation of its acetyl chloride complex at - 1lo”, and HC1 was similarly removed as the (CH&O complex, leaving a trace of SiF,. The result was 2.06 HCl and 1.04 BF3 (both h5%) per calculated (CF3)2AsBH:! unit. Thus the elementary analysis was complete, fully confirming the formula [(CF&AsBHgla. Infrared Spectra. The frequencies (cm-l) of the infrared fundamental peaks observed for [(CF&AsBH2I3 in the vapor phase at 1.2 nim pressure (33”) are compared with the analogous peaks for [(CF3)2PBH2Ia and [(CF&PBD2I3 in Table 11. The relative intensity appears in parentheses after each frequency. Discussion. The 960-cm-’ peak for BH2 out-ofplane rocking fits a previously recognized trend.j By comparison with the 812-cm-’ peak observed for [(CHa)2PBH2]B and other pertinent data for such compounds, the 995-cm-l peak suggests that the HBH angle in [(CF&PBH2I3 might be as much as 10” wider than the 119.3” reported for [(CH3)2PBH2]3.6Also, two different methods estimate the HBH angle as 2.5 to 2.8” narrower in [(CFy)?AsBH2Isthan in [(CF&PBH2I3. The latter comparison would agree with the expectation that As4
