A Versatile Reagent for General Chemistry A series of experiments in general chemistry may present various aspect8 of one compound. We find potassium hydrogen oxalate suitable for this purpose, and the following experiments are suggested. In these experiments, we use 0.1 F KHGO, (and 0.1 F HNO*for comparison) lahelled for student use as acid A soh~tionand acid B solution, respectively. The acid-base ratio of eaeh is determined. Solution cond~tctivitiesare compared. The pH of the two soltttions is estimated using methyl orange and met,hyl violet indicators. The effect of 2 ml of eaeh acid on the color ai a soh~tionprepared from 2 ml 0.01 F FeCb and two drops of 0.1 F KCNS is observed. (5) The equivalent weight of solid acid A iii determined by titration with standard base. (6) The equivalent weigh1 of solid acid A as a reducing agent is found by titration with standard KMn04. (7) Qualitative tests detect K t , C a O Fand NOa-. (1) (2) (3) (4)

The data may be obtained from demonstrations or student experiments. I n any case a final report is required. G. A. DAUPHINEB
