About the L.-S. Fan Festschrift This special Fan issue, for the occasion of L.-S.’s 60th birthday, was initiated in May 2006 when we met in Harrison Hot Springs, Canada, while attending the 12th International Fluidization Conference. This special issue contains 42 outstanding papers, spanning the different areas of research on which L.-S. has made profound impacts. Professors Robert Pfeffer and Jacques Zakin, both long-time friends and colleagues of L.S. in the particle technology community and at The Ohio State University, along with Alissa Park, kindly accepted our invitation and contributed a wonderful preface, which has precisely captured L.-S.’s achievements and contributions to research, professional development, education and society.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to editors of I&EC Research, especially Prof. Donald Paul, for providing us this opportunity to honor L.-S. with this Festschrift issue of papers written by his friends, colleagues, collaborators, and former students and associates. We also like to thank Susan Chapman of the editorial office for her excellent work in coordinating the invitation and manuscript review process. Last but not least, we would like to thank all friends and colleagues who responded to our invitation enthusiastically and made their valuable contributions to the success of this special issue.
