About This Issue

These programs will be useful in any course where oxidation numbers and balancing redox equations are being introduced. T h e animations and quizzes are designed to interest beginning students and a large number of examples are provided to make certain that the procedures for determining oxidation numbers and balancing redox equations will be mastered.

Davld Balley iliinois Wesleyan University T h e Droarams in this issue of JCE: Software provide an interesting approach to the teaching of inorganic redox chemistw. They begin - hy . introducing the concept of oxidation numbers -for elements, comp&ds, and ions and present a set of rules for determining oxidation numbers from chemical formulas. Following drill and practice to reinforce the calculation of oxidation numbers, students proceed to balance redox equations. The questions for quizzes are randomly generated from a rather extensive database that contains numerous examples of elements, ions, and neutral compounds.

Hardware Requirements The programs will run on an Apple II+, IIe, IIc, or IIcs with at least 48K RAM, one disk drive, and Applesoft in ROM. A color monitor is optional. T h e programs are provided on two 5.25-in., DOS 3.3 format disks.
