Academe UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH Pittsburgh Brian R. Strohmeier has joined the department of chemistry as assistant chair. He previously worked as a senior research associate at PPG Industries and a technical supervisor at Alcoa. In 2001, he was chair of the ACS Pittsburgh Section. Strohmeier holds a B.S. in c h e m i s t r y from Delaware Valley College, Doylestown, Pa.; an M.S. in chemistry from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa.; a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh; and an M. A. in business leadership from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh.
Associations FEDERATION OF AMERICAN SOCIETIES FOR EXPERIMENTAL BIOLOGY Bethesda, Md. Frederick R. Rickles has been selected as executive director. Before joining FASEB in July, Rickles was associate vice president for health research, compliance, and technology transfer and professor of medicine and pediatrics at George Washington University Medical Center. From 1993 to 1998, he worked as a professor at Emory University and as the deputy chief for hematologic diseases at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. He was on the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine from 1978 to 1993. Rickles holds an M.D. degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago.
Business AUSTIN CHEMICAL Buffalo Grove, III. Donald E. Butler has accepted the newly created position of chief scientific officer. As part of Pfizer's chemical R&D staff for 45 years, Butler was responsible for inventing and bringing forward synthetic processes for many drugs, most notably the commercial route to Lipitor. He is an inventor on 73 patents. 40

Over the past six years, he has contributed to expanding Austin's global presence in the pharma and nutritional industries. CHARLES RIVER ASSOCIATES Boston Kevin Clark, as aprincipal based in London, focuses on organization, strategy and technology across all sectors of the oil industry His former position was senior manager in Arthur D Little's global energy practice, and prior to that, he worked for Esso Petroleum. Clark holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Bath, in England. Ian Diamond, a consultant to the chemical, petroleum, and related industries, has started as a vice president based in London. Diamond comes from Arthur D. Little, where he was an associate director in the global chemicals practice, based in London. Before that, he worked for the Shell Group. He earned a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Bristol, in England. MichaelJ. Loreth has been appointed a principal based in Boston. He specializes in feasibility analysis, financial evaluation, cost estimation, and technology evaluations covering the mineral, metal, chemical, plastics, and manufactured parts industries. Loreth received an M.S. in chemical engineering and an M.B. A. from Northeastern University, Boston. Chandra Patel, as a senior associate in Berkeley/Oakland, provides corporate strategy and finance assistance, particularly to clients in chemical and related industries. Formerly a manager in Arthur D. Little's strategy and organization practice, Patel's recent clients were a global agrosciences company, a North American plastics company, and a global ink manufacturer. She holds an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Sanjeev Rastogi has started at CRAas a senior associate in Philadelphia. He focuses on clients in chemical, health care, and related industries. His prior work experience includes a consultant position in Arthur D. Little's global chemicals practice and a role as project scientist at Union Carbide, where he worked on new product development and competitive surveillance. Rastogi earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware, Newark.
Christopher Ross has been hired by the firm as a vice president based in Houston. He specializes in strategy and organization assignments in the worldwide petroleum industry, where he has more than 30 years' experience. Formerly, Ross was a vice president and senior director ofArthur D. Little, where he led the firm's Houston office. Prior to that, he was with British Petroleum in the UK. and France. He received a B.S. in chemistry from London University James Smith, who focuses on the downstream sector of the oil industry, has joined the firm as a principal in Boston. He previously held the role of senior manager with Arthur D. Little's global energy practice, and he also worked for Exxon Corp. Smith earned an M.S. in chemical engineering from Columbia University and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. Christine Vaughan has joined CRAas asenior associate in Boston. She specializes in finance, strategy and marketing for clients in chemical and process-oriented industries. She brings 10 years' experience working in the chemical industry as a consultant. Her previous positions include manager in Arthur D Little's global chemical practice, group leader at BASF, and development engineer at DuPont. She holds an M.B.A. from Yale. Arnold Volkenborn has joined CRA as a principal in Mexico City specializing in business strategy and performance improvement for organizations in the downstream petroleum, chemical, and technology sectors. He has worked as a senior manager in Arthur D. Little's energy and strategy practices, a control systems engineer for M. W Kellogg Co., a process engineer for Maraven S.A., an environmental consultant with AmbioConsult S.A., and a product quality appraiser for DSM Polymers & Hydrocarbons. He holds a B.S. in chemical engineering from Simon Bolivar University Caracas, Venezuela. Robert Young has started as a vice president. Based in Boston, he acts as a consultant for chemicals and petroleum clients throughout the world. He previously led the performance improvement practice at Arthur D Little. Before that, Ifoung spent 14 years with Exxon Corp., working in petrochemicals and refining in corporate and operational roles.
