ANALYST'S C O L U M N
Model DK extending the range by using a lead sulfide cell from 400 to 2850 τημ and the traditional photomultiplier tube from 2i0 to 700 ιημ. Scanning speeds can be varied from 5 to 500 minutes in the complete range and in the infrared in 1 minute at highest speed. Working with the Bound Brook Lab oratories of American Cyanamid, War ren Electronics, Inc., has designed a double-beam continuous recording unit called the Spectracord for the DU-type monochromator, which can be attached to existing manually operated instru ments. Scanning speeds in either the visible or ultraviolet range can be var ied from 1.5 to 12 minutes. A feature of the attachment is the packaged unit design of the various component parts, so that they may be removed in case of failure and new ones slipped into place. The faulty unit is shipped to the factory for repair at the convenience of the user. Item was displayed at the Fisher exhibit. X-ray spectrography is receiving at tention these days and has been devel oped into a useful analytical tool to rival emission spectrography. Applied Re search Laboratories showed their x-ray Quantometer for production control, so designed that samples can be changed while the instrument is in operation. They also demonstrated their new 2meter production control Quantometer which can accommodate as high as 70 phototubes. North American Philips featured the new 75-kv. electron microscope, a small model for laboratories not able to afford the research model. It features, as does the larger model, the electromag netic lens system. A resolution of bet ter than 100 A. is guaranteed. Consolidated Engineering, in addition to featuring its building-block analogto-digital data processing systems and line of mass spectrometers, showed a new recording oscillograph (Type 5-119), the foremost feature of which permits a level of reliability heretofore unavail able. Leeds & Northrup showed its recently announced recording spectrometer de signed for phototube measurement of spectral line over the range 2100 to 7000 Α., using a 30,000-line-per-inch Ebert-type grating. Arthur H. Thomas showed for the first time a Van Slyke manometric ap paratus with magnetic stirring. Fea tured also was the electrophoresis appa ratus (paper strip model) design based on the original research of Wieland and Tiselius and used for the estimation of protein constituents of human blood serum but generally useful in research studies in organic and inorganic systems. The E M S O N Model S-M B A L A N C E
HERE I N D E E D is the star of all analytical balances—the Emson Model S-M Balance. For behind this great new, single pan, projection balance lies the 121 years of experience amassed by one of the oldest scientific balance manufacturers in the business—the firm of Wilhelm Spoerhase in Western Germany.
