authority of the Meat Inspection Act of 1907. T h e latter act provides for special inspectors in any establishment processing m e a t foods for interstate or foreign commerce. Under this act, no chemical additives may b e used in meat or m e a t p r o d u c t s without approval of MIS. T h e Insecticide Division of US DA is responsible for t h e registration of all pesticides u n d e r t h e Insecticide, F u n g i c i d e , and Rodenticide Act of 1947. Before any pesticide can be sold interstate, d a t a m u s t b e s u b m i t t e d on its ability to control pests, its safety for use by spray operators a n d on crops, its effects on quality and safety of food, and the potential d a m a g e to other forms of life and to soil. T h e division does not conduct research of this type, b u t d e p e n d s on scientists in t h e Agricultural Research Administration for advice on usefulness, and on the toxicologists in the Public Health Service and in t h e Food and Drug Administration for opinions on safety for the proposed use.
