ACS Community Activities Contest: NCW 2008 Winners by Stacy Jones

The winners of the annual National Chemistry Week (NCW) poster contest were announced on November 14, 2008. The contest, held during the fourth week in October, invites K–12 students to display artistically the impact of chemistry in their lives. The 2008 theme focused on the chemistry of sports. Students were encouraged to emphasize the chemical principles connected with different sports, sports materials, safety equipment, and how the body performs during physical activity. Submissions are first reviewed by each ACS Local Section. One poster in each of four age categories is then sent to the ACS Office of Community Activities for a final judging. This year a record-breaking 83 entries were submitted by Local Sections. Eight winners were chosen from among the scores of exciting and creative posters. Prizes of $250 and $150 were awarded to the first and second place entries at each of the four grade categories. The teachers of the winning students also received prizes. Several of the winning entries are featured on this page. See all
