Objectives & Methods

American Chemical Society

3

Objectives • To provide information to broaden ACS member awareness. • To provide the ACS a snapshot of committee member demographics . • To measure participation across ACS’s 29 committees under ConC purview.

Methods  

 

ACS provided a draft of the original survey. SDA reviewed the survey. After several revisions SDA and ACS produced the final survey. Personalized email invitations were sent to 694 ACS members. 19 emails were undeliverable. Thus 675 invitations were delivered. Participants were offered an incentive and three follow-up reminders were sent to enhance the response rate. 509 completed surveys and three partially completed surveys were received from 7/26/16 through 9/5/16 for a total of 512 responses or a 75.9% response rate. Selected Comments (see spreadsheet accompanying this report for complete list of comments) •

“Employment question should have an option for being a student.”

“Good luck with collecting the info” (2)

“How will you use this data to influence decisions by the ACS?”

“I think economic background is an important area of diversity that is often ignored in these surveys

“I was surprised at some of the categories (e.g., "queer", "cis””)

“It would be wise to compare Committee demographics to the demographics of PhD chemists in the US, since that is the primary source of committee members.”

“It's good that ACS is asking about these demographics now. Thank you.”

“Many members serving on National ACS committees are seniors. This is partly because younger members are too busy with work and family to do much committee work, either nationally or locally.”

“Nice survey! Additional fields you may wish to consider in the future are political views (liberalmoderate-conservative), religious preference, education (public or private), and income. “

“Pointless survey!”

“Thank you for conducting this survey.” (5)

“This survey was easy to fill out and truly only took 5-10 minutes as advertised.”

“Very nice survey. I am looking forward to seeing the results!” American Chemical Society
