HIGHLIGHTS

ACS members on vacation or business in Washington, D . C , or residing in the area, are invited to visit the Society's headquarters building. Conducted tours by trained staff members are available at all hours of the working day for members and their guests. Some of the highlights of the tour are the ACS computer configuration, the Photon ( photocomposition ) process used in the preparation of two ACS journals, the editorial offices and Teletypesetter room, the staff libraries, and the chemical-biological-radiological fallout shelter. The White House and the National Geographic Society's Explorers' Hall are among other points of interest within walking distance of ACS headquarters.

The Chicago Section has enrolled its 5000th member and becomes the third ACS local section to reach that mark. The milestone member, Dennis Pogany, who is a graduate student and assistant at the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy, was guest of honor at a recent section meeting, where he received a gold ACS pin as a memento of the occasion. The two sections which are larger than the Chicago unit are North Jersey and New York, which have 6793 and 6430 members, respectively.

ACS short courses in several areas of modern chemistry are now being planned for the Society's 150th National Meeting in Atlantic City in September. Topics under consideration for course offerings include computer programing, conformational analysis, homogeneous catalysis, infrared spectroscopy, microwave spectroscopy, modern industrial organic synthesis, and molecular orbital theory. Complete details on the courses, instructors, textbooks, costs, and schedules will be published in a forthcoming issue of C&EN. Deadline for registration will be Aug. 28. The Ninth Annual Report on Research under sponsorship of the Petroleum Research Fund, released last month, contains 115 abstracts of research in progress as of September 1964, as well as a comprehensive index to all PRF grants which were active at that time. Also included in the report are a description of the PRF program and its background, and a listing of the members of the PRF advisory board for 1964 and for 1965. The 98-page report will be sent to all local section chairmen, secretaries, and editors. Copies also are available to individuals on request to Petroleum Research Fund, 1155 16th St, N .
