ACS Hong Kong International Chemical Sciences Chapter 2013 Annual Report

DESCRIPTION OF CHAPTER: The chapter is composed of ACS members who live and work in Hong Kong. A number of members attend ACS national meetings and participate in ACS activities.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Logistics and support were given for several seminar speakers visiting Hong Kong to present scientific talks at some local universities. A number of ACS members in Hong Kong helped support the Symposium for Chemistry Postgraduate Research In Hong Kong that was held in April 2013 (this symposium had 609 participants, a keynote speaker, 6 postgraduate student talks, and 280 postgraduate student poster presentations). Some members gave talks on chemistry to secondary school students in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Chapter sent a representative and participated in the first ACS International Chapters Summit held in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA at this ACS National meeting September 2013 Transition our leadership from our past Chairperson Professor David Lee Phillips (from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong) and past Treasurer/Secretary Professor Pauline Chiu (from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong) to Assistant Professor David Xiang LI (from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong) who took up the Chairperson position and Professor Wai Kin Chan (from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong) who took up the Treasurer/Secretary position starting 2014.

MEETINGS HELD DURING THE YEAR: Several informal meetings to address event driven needs (like logistics and support given for several seminar speakers visiting Hong Kong, sending a representative to an ACS meeting or give a talk at a secondary school, etc).

PROJECTED ACTIVITIES FOR NEXT YEAR The ACS Hong Kong International Chapter will continue many of the activities done this year in the coming year such as: a. Dissemination of educational materials from ACS to local organizations as needs and opportunities arise. b. Make Technology Milestone English/Chinese Poster Displays available for secondary schools and other venues as opportunities and requests are made. c. Administer the ACS U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Exams in Hong Kong as requested by local schools d. Provide logistics and support for some seminar speakers visiting Hong Kong to present scientific talks at some local universities as requested or when opportunities arise. e. Interact with other local chemistry organizations to promote science and chemistry as opportunities arise. New Activities 1. Strengthen communication and work more with Hong Kong ACS members in Hong Kong-We plan to set up even a basic website for the HK chapter and also an email list data base for mass or group emails about events, activities and resources available to members and local organizations. 2. Our chapter will find opportunities to sponsor some chemistry-related activities in Hong Kong secondary schools and universities that will make use of ACS educational resources in science promotion. 3. Develop ties with other regional ACS International Chapters and organizations to plan and implement regional activities like conferences and exchanges of members, teachers and students.
