ACS National Meeting

Anaheim in April by Lin W. Morris

Returning to sunny California will be a treat, especially for those digging out from the traditional spring snow storms in other parts of the U.S. While the ACS meeting program is always packed with outstanding speakers and technical sessions, it is also an opportunity to experience some of the best California has to offer. And you don’t need to have a car— contrary to public perception there is inexpensive, public transportation in Los Angeles and Orange County. Information About Anaheim A Guide to Anaheim on the Web is available at http:// www.aguidetoananheim.com. An interactive map of Orange County may be found on the Orange County Visitor Information Web site at http://www.orangecounty.net/html/ visitor.html. The Anaheim/Orange County Visitors & Convention Bureau site is at http://www.anaheimoc.org. The Anaheim Resort Tourist Information Center, 714/533-3691 or http://www.anaheimoc.org, is located at 1500 South Harbor Boulevard (across from the Disneyland Resort entrance). Go there for ART passes and City Pass tickets, resort discount cards, sightseeing tour headquarters, area maps, and more. Public Transportation • Information about Metro is at 213/922-6235 or 800/266-6883; http://www.mta.net • Anaheim: OCTA information is at 714/636-7433; http:// www.octa.net/busrail/geninfo/find.asp

Special Mobility Requirements? Check out “A Wheelchair Rider’s Guide to Los Angeles and Orange County Coast” at http://www.scc.ca.gov/Wheel/ index.html. This is a super guide not only for chair riders but also for anyone needing a little assistance. Anaheim Resort Transit (ART) Contact ART at 888/364-2787; 714/400-9550; http:// www.atnetwork.org. A regional shuttle service that is ADAaccessible, ART has routes from the convention center to tourist attractions, shopping centers, dining, evening entertainment, and hotels in the Anaheim Resort District. All-day adult passes are $3, kids 9 and under are free. Two-day and five-day passes are also available. Tickets may be purchased at most hotels. Things To Do The numerous family attractions in the area are familiar to most—Disney-land, Disney’s California Adventure, Knott’s Theme Park, SeaWorld Adventure Park, and the San Diego Zoo. Sports fans may want to visit the home of the California Angels baseball team at Angel Stadium (714/6342000) or the Mighty Ducks hockey team at Arrowhead Pond (714/704-2400). For the star-struck, try Hollywood—Capital Records, Walk of Fame, and Tinseltown Studio Tours. Logistics for some other, less frivolous entertainment, is listed below.
