ACS NEWS Prize Money Awarded As part of its 50th anniversary cele bration in 1956, the Louisiana Section awarded a $4000 scholarship to the student making the best presentation on "What Science Is Doing to Improve My Community" (C&EN, Nov 5, 1956, page 5423 ). The prize was to be d i v i d e d - $ 2 0 0 0 to the student, and $2000 to the college he would attend. But the winner, James L. Redmond of New Orleans' Fortier High School, chose to attend the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, and he needed only $300 of the prize money. The academy, being a government institu tion, could accept no money. Therefore, the section has awarded the $1700 balance to the second place contestant, Carl W. Townsend, enrolled at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. The $2000 that the institute receives will be used to purchase equipment for its department of chemistry.
