The American Geological Institute’s Minority Participation Program Ethnic minority groups are significantly underrepresented in the geosciences, comprising only about 2.5% of all geoscience students at all levels. To increase he recruitment and retention of the best minority students in the geosciences, the American Geological Institute (AGI) offers scholarships awards to African American, Hispanic and Native American/Pacific Islander students who have declared a major in the geosciences. MPP awards include an academic scholarship and a stipend for professional development expenses, including field camp, scientific meeting attendance or professional society membership. In 2008-2009, the AGI MPP program offered 24 awards to top undergraduate and graduate students. Students are also matched with a mentor from the geoscience community, and can take advantage career networking opportunities provided by AGI.
