SELECTION,

A

IK cclnditionirlg is the control of the temperature, moistore content, and motion of cleaned air in an enclosed space. Therefore air-conditioning equipment must contain the elements for controlling these fact, ors. An nutline nf the functions of complete year-round airconditioning equipment required for the usual comfort and many of the industrial installations is given below. The following discussion will be limited to the cornponent part? of the equipment Iyhich perform each of the fiinctiiins given in the table:

AND EFFICIENCY Control of air temperature in an air-conditioning inrtallation in which an interchanger is used is ohtailled by controlling the combustion of the fuel automatically, or when gases from a manufacturing process are used, by controlling tlie aniount of gas passing through the interchanger. HedingCoil. When hot water or steam is the heating medium for adding heat to the air, the medium is circulated through a coil over which the air to he heated is passed. Because of the similarityaf hot, water and steam coils the discussion which follows is applicable to both types. The material used in the coils must have a high rate of thermal cnndiictivity so that the transfer of heat from the medium to the air will he with iniriimurn lag. The design of the coil is for maximum exterrid surface balanced against the internal disineter of the coil so that maximum uniform heat flow f m n the medium to the coil surface is obtained. The minimum resistance to air flow- without stratification is an important factor in the design. The mechanical features of a wellilesigned heating coil are conipactncss, liglitness in w i g h t ,
