T h e r e is little d o u b t t h a t in t h e long run FIA will affect t h e philosophy of a u t o m a t i c analysis. I n t h e short t e r m , as with microprocessor development, we m a y expect a flurry of m e t b o d s t h a t are no more t h a n t h e straightforward a d a p t a t i o n of existing continuous flow m e t h o d s . T h e real developm e n t s will come a b o u t by full realisation of t h e chemical potential of t h e system. Hopefully, FIA will excite stud e n t s , be of practical value t o analysts, a n d by virtue of its simplicity bring a b o u t a n improved u n d e r s t a n d i n g a n d use of all continuous flow systems.
