T h e Western Carolinas Section elected the following officers: H. P. Vannah, chairman ; F. B. Schirmer, vice chairman ; Alice F. Laubach, secretary and treasurer; H. L . Hunter, councilor; and G. I. Thur m o n d , alternate councilor. M r . Vannah has charge of the research work at California Central Fiber Corp., Pisgah Forest, N. C. Dr. Schirmer and Dr. Hunter are both at Clemson College, Clemson, S. C.

C Schoonovor for a one-year term; president-elect, C. 1:3. White for a one-year term and succeeds to presidency; secretary, J. J. Fahey for a one-year term; and treasurer, J. K . Taylor, for a one-year term.. Councilors elected were: B. D . Van Evera, F. D . Rossini, J. I. Hoffman, N. Bekkedahl, N . L. Drake, and J. R. Spies. Alternate councilors arc: M. Harris, H. L. Camilli Heads Upper Peninsula

Alfred A. Camilli of the Cliffs D o w Chemical Co., Marquette, Mich., has been elected chairman of the Upper Peninsula Section for 1948. H e will take office on Jan. 1, succeeding Ralph E . Menzcl. Other new officers of the section, which has its headquarters a t Houghton, Mich., are: Henry L. Coles, head of the de partment of chemistry and chemical engi neering of Michigan College of Mining and Technology, chairman-elect; C. L. San Clémente also of the Michigan College faculty, treasurer, and Eugene A. Cole of Cliffs D o w , secretary. Arthur W. Goos of Cliffs D o w was named to the SOCIETY'S national Council.
Whitmore Memorial
to Carl Widmer, Jr., senior in the agricultural biochemistry curriculum. The award, given in memory of the late D e a n Frank Whitmore, w a s awarded on the basis of scholarship, professional attitude, and campus activities. Mr. Widmer is a member of the Alpha Zeta fraternity, president of the Liebig Chemical Society, and a member of t hi· Aiçrioultural Student Council.

Detroit Section Organises Student
Croup
Finding that there were six AC'S student affiliate chapters in the Detroit area, as well as other loosely organized groups in colleges, the Detroit Section, ACS, under the leadership o f G. E . F. Brewer, chairman of the section's Educational Committee, has organized a student group comprising s t u d e n t s from the six institutions granting bachelor's degrees in that city. From this group three students have been elected t o assist the Educational Committee with student activities. This project has been developed with the aid of faculty advisers from the schools, including F . L. Bates, University of Detroit; John Clark, Detroit Institute of

Trenton Receives
Section Charter
The Committee on Local Section Activities has recommended acceptance of the proposal for a local section with headquarters at Trenton, N . J., and the territory of Mercer County, N. J., except that part which constitutes the Princeton Section. T h e Council Policy Committee by mail ballot then approved the chartering of the Trenton Section. This action brings the number of local sections t o 125.
