TESTS Assay (By alkalimetry for ammonium). Weigh, to the nearest 0.1 mg, 3.0 g of sample, and dissolve in 50 mL of water in a 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask. Add exactly 50.0 mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide volumetric solution, place a filter funnel loosely in the neck of the flask, and boil until all the ammonia is expelled (about 10–15 min) as determined with litmus paper. Cool, and add 0.15 mL of thymol blue indicator solution. Titrate the excess sodium hydroxide with 1 N sulfuric acid. One milliliter of 1 N sodium hydroxide corresponds to 0.08004 g of NH4NO3.

pH of a 5% Solution at 25.0 °C [Part 2: Direct Electrometric Methods; pH Potentiometry; pH Range; Procedure for pH of a 5% Solution at 25.0 °C].

Insoluble Matter [Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Insoluble Matter]. Use 20 g dissolved in 200 mL of water.

Residue after Ignition [Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Residue after Ignition]. Ignite 10 g.

Chloride [Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Chloride]. Use 2.0 g.

Nitrite [Part 2: Direct Electrometric Methods; Specific Polarographic Procedures; Polarographic Procedure for Nitrate]. Dissolve 0.150 g of sodium nitrite in water, and dilute with water to 100 mL. Dilute 1.0 mL of this solution with water to 100 mL. This solution should be freshly prepared. Use 1.0 g of sample and 0.005 mg of nitrite. (Limit about 5 ppm.)

Phosphate [Part 2: Colorimetry and Turbidimetry; Phosphate; Procedure for Phosphate, Method 1 (Direct Molybdenum Blue)]. Dissolve 4.0 g in 25 mL of approximately 0.5 N sulfuric acid.

For the Determination of Sulfate, Heavy Metals, and Iron

S a m p l e S o l u t i o n A . Dissolve 20 g in 20 mL of water, add 10 mg of sodium carbonate, 5 mL of 30% hydrogen peroxide, 20 mL of hydrochloric acid, and 20 mL of nitric acid. B l a n k S o l u t i o n B . Prepare a solution containing the quantities of reagents used in sample solution A. Digest each in covered beakers on a hot plate (~100 °C) until reaction ceases, uncover, and evaporate to dryness. Dissolve the residues in 5 mL of 1 N acetic acid and 50 mL of water, filter if necessary, and dilute to 100 mL with water (1 mL = 0.2 g).
