T h e m e t h o d s which have been developed i n r e c e n t y e a r s f o r t h e s y s t e m a t i c d e s c r i p t i o n and e n u m e r a t i o n of r i n g s t r u c t u r e s f a l l m a i n l y i n t o two c a t e g o r i e s . In one c l a s s a r e those1p2v3 b a s e d e s s e n t i a l l y on t r a c i n g a continuous path through t h e a t o m s f o r m i n g a r i n g s y s t e m , and i n t h e o t h e r a r e those4v5s6 i n which individual r i n g s a r e built up one by o n e . While t h e f o r m e r m e t h o d s a p p e a r , a t l e a s t i n s o m e i n s t a n c e s , t o be s i m p l e r t o apply, t h e r e c o n s t r u c t i o n of a conventional r i n g - d i a g r a m f r o m t h e l i n e a r d e s c r i p t i o n of i t is l e s s s t r a i g h t f o r w a r d , b e c a u s e t h e individual r i n g s c o m p r i s i n g a s y s t e m a p p e a r only by f o r m ing cross-1inka:es i n t h e d e s c r i b e d p a t h . Metho d s i n t h e second c a t e g o r y undoubtedly a r e e a s i e r t o i n t e r p r e t , and t h i s i s b e c a u s e t h e y follow m o r e c l o s e l y t h e u s u a l way of r e g a r d i n g ring s y s t e m s ,i . e . , i n t e r m s of individual, s m a l l r i n g s fused t o g e t h e r i n v a r i o u s w a y s . The m o s t c o m p l e t e l y developed method of t h i s type h a s been t h a t of T a y l o r - P a t t e r s o n Dyson ( T - P - D ) , 6 and t h i s p a p e r p r e s e n t s m o d i f i c a t i o n s of t h e i r s y s t e m which yield i m p r o v e d e n u m e r a t i o n p a t t e r n s , show t h e c h a r a c t e r i s t i c t y p e s of r i n g fusion c l e a r l y , and enable m o l e c u lar f o r m u l a s t o b e c a l c u l a t e d f r o m t h e s y s t e m a t i c e x p r e s s i o n s without any additional i n f o r m a t i o n . It w i l l b e a p p a r e n t t h a t t h e application of t h e s e m e t h o d s l i e s m a i n l y i n t h e f i e l d of c h e m i c a l n o t a t i o n , although they could a l s o provide a b a s i s f o r c l a s s i f y i n g r i n g s y s t e m s , and a p r o cedure for converting ciphers to systematic n a m e s h a s been d e s c r i b e d . I The T - P - D method r e q u i r e s t h a t e n u r n e r a tion shall commence i n the l a r g e s t ring at i t s point of fusion with t h e next s e n i o r r i n g , and p r o c e e d i n t h e m a n n e r which g i v e s t h e l o w e s t sequence of n u m b e r s t o t h e ring-fusion p o i n t s . In s y m m e t r i c a l s y s t e m s w i t h all r i n g s of equal s i z e t h e b a s i c p a t t e r n of e n u m e r a t i o n i s , t h e r e f o r e , a s p i r a l one; e n u m e r a t i o n s t a r t s i n t h e c e n t e r r i n g and m o v e s outward on s u c c e s s i v e o r b i t s u n t i l t h e whole s t r u c t u r e h a s been e m braced (Fig. 1 ) . In many other c a s e s , however, i n which t h e s y s t e m i s a s y m m e t r i c , o r t h e c e n t r a l r i n g i s not t h e l a r g e s t o n e , e n u m e r a t i o n h a s t o c o m m e n c e o f f - c e n t e r , and t h i s r e s u l t s (i) i n

r e l a t e d s y s t e m s , which d i f f e r only i n s i z e s a n d / o r s e q u e n c e s of r i n g s , having quite d i f f e r e n t p a t t e r n s of e n u m e r a t i o n , and (ii) i n a g r e a t e r n u m b e r of o r b i t s of t h e g e n e r a t i n g r i n g being required to complete the enumeration. (In Fig. 2 , left-hand column, c o m p a r e A , B and C; D and E ; F and G.) It h a s now been found t h a t , i f a l l s y s t e m s a r e t o be d e s c r i b e d with m a x i m u m i n t e r m s of t h e f e w e s t and s m a l l economy, k, e s t o r b i t s , and i f r e l a t e d s y s t e m s a r e t o be enumerated similarly, the enumeration must always s t a r t i n the m o s t c e n t r a l ring ( r e g a r d l e s s of s i z e ) , and f u r t h e r , t h a t i t m u s t p r o c e e d i n t h e s a m e d i r e c t i o n throughout and i n t h e m a n n e r which gives not t h e lowest s e q u e n c e of l o The validity of c a n t s , but t h e l o w e s t =. t h e s e findings as g e n e r a l p r i n c i p l e s h a s been r e i n f o r c e d s t r o n g l y by t h e exploration of t h e new method explained below f o r d e s c r i b i n g and enumerating peri-fused systems; the satisfact o r y application of t h i s method m a k e s i t e s s e n t i a l f o r a l l t h e component r i n g s of a s y s t e m t o be e n u m e r a t e d i n t h e s a m e d i r e c t i o n ( c l o c k w i s e o r anticlockwise) and i n t h e m a n n e r which g i v e s t h e l o w e s t t o t a l of l o c a n t s . In connection with t h e s e modifications i t m a y be noted t h a t i n t h e W i s w e s s e r s y s t e m , 2 which u s e s a continuous-path m e t h o d , t h e c o r responding r u l e i s a l s o a "lowest t o t a l " one, and m a t h e m a t i c a l s u p p o r t h a s been c l a i m e d f o r t h i s . The nucleus of a g r o u p of r i n g s i n r e t i c u l a r fusion i s the _Y-atom, anti t h e s t a g e s by which t h e s i m p l e s t r e t i c u l a r s t r u c t u r e should be built up s y s t e m a t i c a l l y a r e shown i n (4A). To t h e s t a r t i n g ring i s a d d e d , f i r s t l y , a t h r e e - a t o m , r e t i c u l a r adduct; t h i s d o e s not i n i t s e l f c o m p l e t e the second r i n g , but i t f o r m s t h e b r i d g e between t h e s t a r t i n g r i n g and the next r i n g - a d d u c t , which s t a r t s f r o m the 2-position. C o m p a r a t i v e l y few known r i n g s y s t e m s exhibit a g r e a t e r d e g r e e of condensation t h a n c o r o n e n e , but a n a l y s i s i n t e r m s of t h e i r Y - a t o m s e n a b l e s t h e m a l l t o be e n u m e r a t e d and d e s c r i b e d s y s t e m a t i c a l l y with r e m a r k a b l e s i m p l i c i t y . T h e r e a r e two d i f f e r e n t s i t e s a t which f u r t h e r r i n g s c a n be added to c o r o n e n e . At o n e , f o r e x a m p l e , position 8 , a n o r m a l adduct i s r e q u i r e d , and a t t h e o t h e r , for e x a m p l e , position 9 , a r e t i c u l a r one i s n e e d e d , while when two a r e added i n s u c c e s s i o n both a r e r e t i c u l a r . OTHER TYPES O F RING FUSION The d e s c r i p t i o n of b r i d g e d and s p i r o s y s t e m s a l s o benefits f r o m t h e i n t r o d u c t i o n of s p e c i a l s y m b o l s t o signify t h e s e c h a r a c t e r i s t i c t y p e s of fusion. When fusion of two r i n g s t a k e s p l a c e along two f a c e s i n s t e a d of only one f a c e , U i s p l a c e d a f t e r t h e l o c a n t t o denote t h e o c c u r r e n c e of a o n e - a t o m b r i d g e . S i m i l a r l y , U 2 , U3 and U4 a r e u s e d f o r b r i d g e s of two, t h r e e and four a t o m s , r e s p e c t i v e l y . F o r s p i r o f u s i o n , which involves only one a t o m i n s t e a d of two, X i s p l a c e d a f t e r t h e l o c a n t . The addition of t h r e e s u c c e s s i v e a d d u c t s l e a d s t o a new, h i g h e r d e g r e e of c o n d e n s a t i o n , i n which t h e m i d d l e r i n g i s f o r m e d by t h e a d d i tion of only two a t o m s ( F i g . 8 D , E ) . A n a l y s i s of t h e g e n e r a l s i t u a t i o n shows t h a t w h e r e a s t h e c o n v e r s i o n of benzene t o c o r o n e n e r e q u i r e s s i x s i n g l e r e t i c u l a r a d d u c t s , e a c h of t h r e e a t o m s , the c o n v e r s i o n of c o r o n e n e t o " c o r o n o c o r o n e n e " r e q u i r e s s i x p a i r s of a d d u c t s , e a c h p a i r cons i s t i n g of five ( 3 t 2 ) a t o m s . T h e s y m b o l Y Y m a y be u s e d to signify addition of t h i s t w o - r i n g , f i v e - a t o m a d d u c t . S i m i l a r l y , Y Y Y would denote a t h r e e r i n g - a d d u c t of 3 t 2 t 2 a t o m s , i f s y s t e m s of t h i s c o m p l e x i t y b e c a m e known. When l e s s t h a n a c o m p l e t e c y c l e of t h e s e a d d u c t s is r e q u i r e d , t h e l a s t one i n a s e r i e s n e c e s s a r i l y c o n t a i n s one o r two additional a t o m s , and i t w i l l , t h e r e f o r e , be c i p h e r e d i n a s e p a r a t e o p e r a t i o n . Y Y r e q u i r e s t h e s u b t r a c t i o n of C3H3 f r o m t h e f o r m u l a calculated f o r a simple ortho-fused system.

REVERSAL O F ENUMERATION The obvious d i s a d v a n t a g e of both t h e T - P - D m e t h o d s and t h e p r e s e n t d e v e l o p m e n t s of t h e m is t h a t they a s s i g n t h e low n u m b e r s t o t h e f u s e d p o s i t i o n s , s o t h a t even t h e s i m p l e s t s y s t e m s , l i k e naphthalene and i n d e n e , a r e e n u m e r a t e d d i f f e r e n t l y f r o m e s t a b l i s h e d p r a c t i c e . The f u s e d p o s i t i o n s a r e , m o r e o v e r , the o n e s l e a s t l i k e l y t o be s u b s t i t u t e d . I t is p r o p o s e d , t h e r e f o r e , t h a t f o r t h e p u r p o s e s of c i t i n g t h e p o s i t i o n s of h e t e r o a t o m s and s u b s t i t u e n t s t h e e n u m e r a t i o n of a l l s y s t e m s , as obtained by t h e m e t h o d s d e s c r i b e d , should b e r e v e r s e d f r o m beginning to end. T h e l o w e r - n u m b e r e d p o s i t i o n s t h e n bec o m e predominantly the unshared a t o m s , a s i s c u s t o m a r y , and t h e l o w e s t - n u m b e r e d r i n g s a r e a l w a y s t h e o u t e r m o s t o n e s . Consequently, f o r

t h e c o m m o n e s t type of s y s t e m , n a m e l y , n o r m a l fusion with s i x - m e m b e r e d r i n g s ( r e c o g n i z a b l e by t h e c o m p l e t e a b s e n c e of modifying s y m b o l s ) , we know without even working out t h e r i n g s t r u c t u r e t h a t positions 1, 2, 3 and 4 a r e i n one e n d - r i n g and p o s i t i o n s 5, 6 , 7 and 8 i n a n o t h e r end-ring. This r e s u l t s i n the unshared a t o m s i n naphthalene, p h e n a n t h r e n e , indene and fluor e n e retaining t h e i r a c c e p t e d e n u m e r a t i o n s , and a n t h r a c e n e differing only i n t h e 10-position being r e n u m b e r e d 12--a c h a n g e which is h a r d l y l i k e l y t o be m i s u n d e r s t o o d . H e t e r o c y c l i c analogs of t h e two-ring s y s t e m s a r e a l s o unchanged, but f o r t h r e e - r i n g h e t e r o s y s t e m s no g e n e r a l s t a t e m e n t c a n be m a d e ; a n t h r a c e n e , phenanthrene and f l u o r e n e a r e exceptions t o t h e Ring Index r u l e s and so a r e a c r i d i n e and c a r b a z o l e , which a r e n u m b e r e d s i m i l a r l y . Some o t h e r h e t e r o s y s t e m s of f l u o r e n e s t r u c t u r e a r e n u m b e r e d l i k e t h e h y d r o c a r b o n , but t h o s e r e s e m b l i n g a n t h r a c e n e and p h e n a n t h r e n e a r e g e n e r a l l y not.
