An lmprovement for Chromatography In column chromatography, the column is usually made of glass, which is suitable for color mixtures, since the separated bands can he seen. However, for colorless mixtures, a series of processes is needed t o detect the collected fractions. Which are time consuming and troublesome. Here we offer a new idea whichsimplified the separation. Since glass is not transparent to ultraviolet light, we change the column to a quartz one and then use a fluorescent adsorbent. During development, we can use a UV lamp t o irradiate the quartz column. Dark bands can be observed and selective collection of each component is easily achieved. The fluorescent adsorbent can be obtained by mixing Silica Gel for TLC (containing fluorescent material, Merck, 60HF25d+866)and Silica Gel for column (Merck, mesh 70-230) in 1:4 ratio. The mixture gives a suitable flow rate. Columns made of polyethylene, polypropylene, Teflona and nylon can also he used for the same purpose. Hung-Cheh Chiong and Pei-Lin Wang
