An Inexpensive All Glass Sealed Stirrer Very often, leak-proof stirring is required for air sensitive chemicsl reactions. Commonly used mercury seal stirrer is inefficient, complicated, and unsuitable for chemicals affecting mercury. An inexpensive all glass sealed stirrer may be construoted using a surgical syringe of about 10-ml capacity. To the front end of the syringe t,uhe is attached a standard glass cone of suitable size (B24). Suitable length of agless rod (l-cm diam) is attached to the front end of the syringe rod, the rear end of the rod is drawn and suitable length of glass tube (l-cm diam) is attached to it and closed on the top. This may he attached by a. piece of rubber tubing to a. stirring motor while the other end ir molded in the form of a stirrer. The standard joint cone may be fitted to the reaction vessel. For smooth stirring a drop of alubricant like glycerine or pump oil is added on the t,op of the ground gless portion of the syringe; even 8, drop of the same solvent med for the reaction may serve as lubricant, thus avoiding any chance of contamination t o thereaction. For more efficient stirring a semicircular Teflon piece may be suspended from the side end of the stirring rod as used in a commercial stirrer.
