An Inexpensive Total Effluent Collector for Gas Chromatography There are times, in the practice of preparative gas chromatography, when it is necessary to resort to the eolleetion of the total column effluent in order to recover a desired component. Evacuable glass bulbs have been commercially available for several years. However, they me not especially convenient to use and can easily lose pest of the effluent or, worse, become contaminated by an injudicious soap bubble if one is not careful. One readily available solution to this problem is the Playtexm Baby Nurser. Used in reverse (i.e., starting with an empty disposable plastic sack) this system will collect up t o -200 ml of column effluent. The chromatograph exit port is fitted with a hypodermic needle which is inserted into the n i d e durine collection. The end of the sack can then be eaoled in an ice-salt bath. The portion containing the condensed component can be cut off fur recovery or rinsed with a smdl quentity of solvent injected through the nipple. For routine operation, a. holder may be constructed far the Playtexa system. I t may also be desirehle, in ijome cases, to flush the assembled system several times with an inert atmosphere, such as nitrogen or helium, before squeezing it empty and using for the collection of sensitive components. One should also make sure that the plastic does not reset with solvents or components collected.
