Current Coal Preparation Practices 01) In the United States today coal preparation practices are directed toward maximizing Btu recovery, 3-shift-per-day operation of preparation plants, fine-size coal washing, closed water circuits, and reducing sulfur in the final product. In 1976, about 665 million tons of coal were produced, an increase of 24 million tons from 1975. Table I compares clean coal tonnage produced by mechanical cleaning and thermal drying equipment in 1975. Dense-medium processes produced 32.6% of all the clean coal, an increase of 1.6%, while the percentage of coal cleaned by jigs dropped 2.2% to 46.6%. Although only 2.5% of the coal was produced by dry cleaning, interest is growing in the application of dry separation techniques to remove impurities from western coal deposits where water is limited. The tonnage of thermally dried coal continues to decrease as increasingly stringent particulate emission regulations escalate the cost of thermal drying. Since 1970 the proportion of thermally dried bituminous coal has decreased 50%. However, the use of thermal drying will increase in the future as more of the low-sulfur western coals with high inherent moisture of about 25% are used to meet the increased demand for low-sulfur coal. Fluidized -bed dryers now dry 72.5% of all the thermally dried coal.
