DISPAL an ultra-pure alumina The Product: "DISPAL" alumina is a fine, friable, white crystalline ma terial with ultimate crystallites of 0.005 micron, resulting in outstand ing dispersibility. In commercial ap plications to-date, this extremely uniform alpha alumina monohydrate has been easier to handle due to its very high loose bulk density (45-50 l b . / f t . 3 ) and l a c k of f l u f f y f i n e s . DISPAL's high surface area (200 sq. m/gram) is less fibrous than other commercially available aluminas and exhibits highersubstantivity with treated particles or surfaces. Heavy use or exposure in soiling atmos pheres and series of repeated clean ings have not dislodged DISPAL from the treated material.. Virtually free of all inorganic impurities, this ultra-uniform, pure alumina is ex tremely stable in dispersions. DISPAL alpha alumina monohydrate is currently available in large scale commercial quanti ties, and is in-use in several in dustries on a major poundage basis. All sampling requests will be filled from commercial inventories.

The Properties: Current com mercial applications sup ported by extensive labora tory and field testings indicate that DISPAL alpha alumina monohydrate re-

The Applications: In Plastics: Several major dishwasher manufacturers are currently using DISPAL on plastisoi coated surfaces as DISPAL imparts a lasting hydrophilic coating to hydrophobic plastisoi surfaces and improves their wetability (DISPAL is also being used to coat hydrophobic ceramic and mild steel dishwasher parts); dramatically improves soil resistance and anti-stat of plastic bottles, which will virtually wipe clean with a damp cloth; adds anti-slip and anti-stat to other packaging; Conoco's new alpha alumina monohydrate fills wallpaper or auto upholstery and other plastic coated fabrics, significantly increasing resistance to soil and static, improves cleaning and helps maintain colorbetter; coats plastic moldings or extrusions for improved electroplating; "sheets" photofilm, rainwear, shower curtains, glasses and films to end water beading and speed evaporation. In Carpets, drapes, textiles, etc.: Manufacturers report that DISPAL will not "walk off" with severe traffic, resists heavy vacuuming and is significantly more substantive to the

f i b e r s than o t h e r c o m m e r c i a l l y available products; w o o l , nylon and polyester carpets and drapes have shown better soil resistance and improved anti-stat properties; cleaning is reported to be easier and requires less severe cleansing action; a major new hotelmotel lobby carpet has withstood winter conditions excely/ lently, giving / excellent / ' anti-static L, protection. D I S P A L is used both in initial treatment and in rug shampoos; because of its positive charge, DISPAL has a superior affinity for negatively charged wool f i b e r s a n d w o u l d a d d to f i b e r strength, dye or finishes treatment and fiber processing, such as spinning. In Paper and paper-making: Paper and board manufacturing companies are currently benefiting from DISPAL's ability to coagulate pitch particles which clog screens, slime rolls and ultimately cause shutdown of calender lines for cleaning; paper quality is also improved by the elimination of these negatively charged particles; DISPAL alumina treated paper bags, cartons and corrugated will exhibit improved antislipand antiblock properties while improving printability. In Cosmetics, toilet articles, surfactants & polishes: DIS-

PAL alumina produces extremely stable dispersion; promotes thicker, dry and stable foams; forms controllable thixotropic gels; allows ointments to cling easily to negativelycharged particles such as hair; slip resistance to polishes as well as acts as a drying agent. As a Filler, sealer, electrical transmission aid, reinforcer, cold temperature additive: DISPAL's use is so diverse, due to the specialized properties, it can add to a wide variety of applications. As a filler and binder in capacitance papers DISPAL contributes superior electrical properties; it is an excellent cold temperature additive for ferrites used in armature cores; as a light transmission aid, a DISPAL coating will offer high efficiency lighting to incandescent bulbs; as a reinforcing additive it will improve such elastomers as butyl, nitrile and neoprene; as a sealer it not only fills a surface but improves its ability to resist scale build-up. A small percentage of DISPAL alumina in c o m b i n a tion with high temperature refractories appears to lower the sintering temperature, increase the bulk density, and decrease the shrinkage of the c e r a m i c m a t e r i a l . In a d d i t i o n , DISPAL alumina acts as a binder for siliceous and ceramic substrates. Conoco's technical staff will be happy to give you further product or property analysis as you require— recognizing of course, that the potential diversity of use for this new, unique material is vast.
