Announcement and Description of the Journal of Chemical Education Editor-in-Chief Position Ellen Yezierski* Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056, United States ABSTRACT: The Board of Publication of the Division of Chemical Education announces the opening of a search for the ninth Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chemical Education. The Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chemical Education is responsible for all aspects of its publication either directly or cooperatively through the copublication agreement with the American Chemical Society Publications Division. he Board of Publication of the Division of Chemical Education (DivCHED) announces the opening of a search for the ninth Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the Journal of Chemical Education (JCE). The Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chemical Education is responsible for all aspects of its publication either directly or cooperatively through the copublication agreement with the American Chemical Society (ACS) Publications Division. The EIC is expected to have broad knowledge of chemistry content, chemistry education, and chemistry education research; to possess a clear vision of the role of a peer-reviewed journal; to exhibit diplomacy, good interpersonal skills, decisiveness, and writing/editing ability; and to meet publication deadlines while managing a sizable workload. The EIC is appointed to a 5-year renewable term. To help with the transition, the new EIC will serve in conjunction with the current EIC, Norbert Pienta, for up to a year. The new EIC will assume full responsibility for operating the Journal of Chemical Education on January 1, 2020.

5. consults with EIC and staff of ChemEd Xchange, a web publication of the Board of Publication. The JCE EIC is responsible for ensuring the Journal is responsive to an evolving publication landscape and must have the tenacity and skills to bring creative plans to fruition. The current EIC spends about 20 h per week on JCE work. Daily attention to Journal issues and time management skills are essential, as is the ability to work with a broad range of people including authors, reviewers, Associate Editors, members of the Board of Publication, the administration and staff of the ACS Publications Division, and editorial staff. The Editor must effectively manage a large budget and work with financial representatives from JCE publication partners. As with other ACS Journals, the EIC is expected to maintain a program of scholarly activity and participate in national and international outreach to promote the mission of the Journal.





DESCRIPTION OF EDITOR-IN-CHIEF OF THE JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION POSITION The Board of Publication selects the EIC of JCE, provides general policy guidance, and oversees fiscal matters. Together with the EIC, the Board interacts with its ACS Publications Division copublication partner on matters related to the contractual agreement concerning the Journal. The EIC: 1. directs an editorial staff who helps manage the submission and flow of manuscripts through the manuscript management system (Paragon Plus) including the assembly of issues; 2. manages a group of Associate Editors who facilitate peer review and make manuscript decisions about suitability for publication; 3. works with the ACS Publications production team to make accepted submissions into web or print published documents; 4. interacts with ACS Publications administration concerning publication policies, marketing, and distribution; and © XXXX American Chemical Society and Division of Chemical Education, Inc.

SUPPORT FROM THE HOST INSTITUTION

Hosting the Journal brings prestige and name recognition to the host institution. In return, the host institution is required to help facilitate the efficient operation of the Journal. This includes providing: • office space for editorial staff at no charge to JCE; • arrangements for payroll and accounting support for JCE staff; • time release for the JCE EIC at no cost to JCE; and • letter of support and continuing commitment from the cognizant university official including Department Chair, Dean, Provost, and/or Vice President, depending on the organization of the institution. Documentation of institutional support will not be requested by the search committee until an applicant is named a finalist. Received: August 18, 2017

CURRENT EDITORIAL SUPPORT STAFF The EIC selects and manages a group of Editorial Staff and Associate Editors. The current EIC manages editorial staff and a group of Associate Editors.

Finalists will be notified in spring 2018 and be required to provide additional information regarding institutional support before interviews take place during summer 2018.

Editorial staff positions for the Journal currently include: • JCE office administrators (two people) who work primarily within the manuscript management system Paragon Plus to check in submissions, document permissions, and manage the flow of manuscript from submission through review to production by the ACS Journals production team; • Managing Editor (one person) who assists the EIC in the triage of submitted manuscripts, assigns manuscripts to Associate Editors, composes issues and issue covers, and manages special projects (e.g., special issues); • Senior Development EditorCopy (one person) who advises the EIC and Associate Editors on writing and provides feedback to authors about organization and content of their submissions; and • Senior Development EditorGraphics (one person) who advises the EIC and Associate Editors on graphics and provides feedback and mentoring about production of graphics.

Associate Editors

Associate Editors currently affiliated with the Journal are • Precollege Associate Editors (two people) whose focus includes the solicitation and the review of manuscripts targeting the precollege audience (or includes them as authors); serve as Associate Editor for ChemEd Xchange; and manage special issues related to the precollege audience; • Chemistry Education Research Associate Editor (one person) whose focus includes the solicitation and review of manuscripts concerning chemistry education research; and • Disciplinary Associate Editors (four people) who manage the review of submissions following traditional disciplinary areas of chemistry (i.e., physical, analytical, organic, biochemistry, inorganic). APPLICATION PROCEDURE Applications must include a cover letter summarizing the candidate’s qualifications for the position, a complete curriculum vitae, and an editorial leadership statement. This statement describes the candidate’s vision for the Journal including the candidate’s (1) view of the chemistry education community, (2) ways in which the Journal can continue to serve its various constituencies, and (3) goals and plans to carry the Journal into the future to thrive and lead in the changing landscape of publication.
