Announcements Benzene ’95: A n International Conference on Toxicity-Carcinogenesis-Epidemiology -Risk The Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute, Piscataway, New Jersey, is sponsoring “Benzene ’95: An International Conference on Toxicity-Carcinogenesis-EpidemiologyRisk, June 17-20, 1995. Benzene ’95 will be an international research symposium focused on the examination of the effects of chronic benzene exposure. It will examine human exposure to benzene; its metabolism; pharmacokinetics; mechanisms of action; biomarkers; cellular toxicity in bone marrow cells; progression from bone marrow damage to leukemia; chromosome change; human epidemiology of benzene-induced diseases; and current approaches to benzene risk assessment. Approximately 50 authorities in the field are scheduled to speak. For further information, please contact: Jill Braun at 908-932-9271 (phone) or 908-932-8726 (fax). TX950478U
European Conference on Combination Toxicology The first European Conference on Combination Toxicology will be held October 11-13, 1995, in the Congress Centre Koningshof, Veldhoven, The Netherlands. The goal of the conference is twofold: (1)to discuss in depth experimental designs to study the effects of defined chemical mixtures, and (2) to open the discussion between regulators and scientists on how to deal with combined exposures in human risk assessment and standard setting. The specific aims of the Congress are: (1)to introduce the concepts of combination toxicology with respect to terminology, research methodologies, hazard assessment, and regulations; (2) to present current international research on defined chemical mixtures; (3) to define needs for future research on combination toxicology; (4) to discuss the applicability of toxic equivalency factors; and (5) to discuss the use of present knowledge on combination toxicology in risk assessment and standard setting. The conference will begin by introducing the concepts of combination toxicology. Next, current research on chemical mixtures will be presented by invited speakers and in poster sessions. Research needs and implications for risk assessment will be discussed in working groups, addressing selected topics. The conference will conclude with a panel discussion evaluating the state of scientific knowledge, future research needs, and the degree of consensus within the scientific and regulatory community about considering combined exposures in risk assessment and regulations.
