COLLOID CHEMISTRY Theoretical and Applied Collected and Edited by J E R O M E A L E X A N D E R The most comprehensive end modern treatment of Colloid Chemistry in any language. The sixty papers in Volume V contain a huge amount of coordinated knowledge which is of great value to investigators in many branches of science and technology.

ARTIME research is centering around colloid chemistry: Volume V of this internationally famous series appears at a time when the tremendous importance of colloidal phenomena i n both war a n d p e a c e is more widely recognized than ever before, a n d when n e w techniques a r e becoming available to study them. The work oi dozens of authorities of many nationalities, it presents an extensive pcmorama of facts together with their evaluation a n d critical appraisal. It cannot b e too highly recommended as a reference book for all workers in the ample domains of bio chemistry a n d physical chemistry. It will also serve to integrate a n d interpret t h e tremendous amount of research d o n e during t h e last d e c a d e in many highly special ized fields. S u m m a r y of Contents of V o l u m e V

Part I of V o l u m e V deals with advances in Theory and Methods, e.g., the electron microscope, the cyclotron, the betatron, supersonics, electron diffraction, super-pressures, molecular stills, novel ultracentrifuges, and also the results obtainable with the new apparatus. Theoretical papers throw light on the constitution, behavior, synthesis and analysis of material structures by unravelling their successively finer complexities. Part II of Volume V covers many closely interrelated aspects of chemistry, biology, and medicine, starting from the chemical level and working upward to such clinical complexities as inflammation, homeostasis, and cancer. From the mosaic of papers there emerges a rather clear view as to what underlies life, growth, differentiation, evolution, ageing and death, and those deviations from normality which are termed "disease." The Appendix, listing nuclear proper ties, will be of value to those who can employ radioactive atoms, immediately detectable by a Geiger counter. V o l u m e five 1 2 6 0 Pages
