Appendix A Generic Group Names Given below are the principal simple and selected composite generic group names, together with their structure types and the chapters in which they or closely related groups are discussed. In the structures, R denotes an aliphatic hydrocarbon residue and Ar denotes an aromatic ring. Most of the composite names beginning with alk-, alkyl-, and alkan(e)have aromatic analogs beginning with ar-, aryl-, and aren(e)-, respectively. Group
