b A number of ethylene oxide condensates, representing all the common commercially available nonionic detergent stock types, were studied by the technique of quantitative high-resolution proton nuclear magnetic resonance. In addition, a number of nonionics separated from commercial detergent formulations by ion exchange techniques were examinlsd. In all cases, the type of hydrophobe and the ratio of hydrophilic to hyclrophobic portions of the molecule were identified. In most cases, average values of the molecular weight of each portion of the molecule were determined, as well as other pertinent fectures such as type of aromatic substitution and degree of branching in an aliphatic moiety. surfactants based on ethyl(me oside condensates are being i i s ~more l estensively each year.
