Introduction There seeins to be no doubt about the existence of the definite crystalline salt, sodium nietasilicat,e, KasSi03. This series of investigat,ions, comprising conductivity, transport numbers, hydroxyl ion concentration, sodium ion concentration, silicate ion concentration, and total osmotic activity measurements, on solutions of varying ratio K a 2 0: SiO?, indicates that Ka2SiOa exists as such in solution a t 2 j"C and that in all probability a definite salt of the composition S a y O: z SiOe.the evidence already obtained pointing to KaHSiOs, also exists in solution a t this temperature, Some indication of what salts do exist and are stable in solution, may be gained by means of a phase rule inrestigat,ion of the ternary system S a 2 0 : YiOy:HsO a t zj°C. S o such investigation is found in the literature; but some work, mostly froin the Geophysical Laboratory, Kashington, has been done in connection lvith the problem of alkali silicate melts a t high teuiperatures.
